Metroid Other M

I sold my Wii earlier this year...I thought about keeping it for this game (and Zelda) but it's not worth it. Wii...well...it sorta sucks.

wii does suck but it is so cheap now that i'm going to buy another one when DKCR comes out. i'll have quite a back log of games to play at that point too.

metroid other m
mario galaxy 2
new super mario brothers

The game is a travesty. Strip away the metroid and it's a very poor game with a ridiculous story. A lot of reviewers are throwing it softballs because it's a metroid game. I love metroid as much as anyone else but they really screwed up.

Don't understand the appeal of "metroid".

You play a lady in a suit shooting stuff.

Seems like every other shooter - substitute chick suit.

It is painfully obvious you don't get Metroid by your comment.

Metroid isn't about shooting stuff, it is about exploring and gaining new ablities to explore further. The shooting takes a giant backseat to that.

Unfortunately, the opposite is true for this game. The exploration is stripped back, and on top of that, the shooting is not very compelling. The ninja gaiden influence is very strong, which sounds like a good thing, but the execution is terrible.

So much of the failure here has to do with the controls and the boneheaded decision to go with a wiimote held sideways, and the extremely aggravating first person mechanic.

I never thought I'd say this, but I wish they never made this game. Its tarnishing the memory of one of my favorite series.

I already had written the game off as trash months ago when I heard Team Ninja was working on it. I they would make it action heavy since that is all they know. I thought it looked like trash awhile ago and the more and more I've seen of it the more I felt no interest in the game sadly. Metroid is one of my fav game series so this whole thing hasn't had me happy for sometime now 🙁

Never liked the Metroid Prime games, found them to be boring.

Commercial is pretty cool, the girl cast as Samus should have bigger jugs though 😀

Not only do the mechanics of the game have questionable quality, but the changes they made to Samus's character do as well.

They basically stripped her of her independence and stoic strength, and turned her into a stereotypical damsel in distress who needs to be saved by some other, in-that-instant more capable guy.

Not to mention they force an emotional scene in a place and way that makes no sense, only to make Samus a more conventional woman.

I played this for two hours last night. Story and characters are pretty bad, gameplay is pretty decent so far. Switching between first and third person isn't as bad as I thought it would be, although it can be frustrating at times.

It's definitely missing a lot of the qualities that made past Metroid titles great. For instance, the presentation, the music, the way Super Metroid unfolds is captivating (I mean, come on). I can't say the same for M:OM so far.

Metroid or not, I think it's hard to make an impressive and compelling first/third-person sci-fi game given how crowded this genre has gotten, not to mention the limitations of the Wii. The graphics look great "for a Wii game" but are pretty mediocre by 2010 standards.

Sadly, I think people that loved the Prime games probably won't really like this, and people that preferred Super Metroid would be better served playing Shadow Complex (or the GBA Metroids). This game is definitely not terrible, though.

Wait until you've died a few times due to the inability to move during the crazy first person mode.

Then wait until you've spent 5-10 minutes trying to figure out which pixel it wants you to find when you're locked in to first person mode.

Or wait until you've died running straight into enemy there's no way you can see coming due to the camera.

It doesn't get better, it gets worse. I'm prob not going to even finish it, and that's extremely rare for me.

They never should have worked with Team Ninja on the game...a prized franchise like Metroid needs to be handled with more care.

2 of my all time favorite series disappointed me this year. Castlevania and now Metroid. I tried the game out, and the controls are just odd. If you're going to make it 2d, then leave it 2d..If 3d, then 3d (2 1/2 d with side scroll mechanics is fine).

Guess I'll save my money for epic kirby.

I hold the Metroid series above all others--even the Half Life and Zelda games--I mean I just adore it as a child.

Then I remember when the first Prime game was on the verge of release and a lot of people freaking out, mainly because Samus was being "shoehorned" from 2D into the 3D, first-person shooter genre. This wasnt what Metroid was about! It wasnt about shooting! I admit I was one of those people. So I approached Prime 1 with extreme hesitation, and thankfully found it to be an incredibly fun game that maintaining the Metroid vibe. I was releived! The Prime series played out very well (despite the fact that Prime 2 was a degregation to the franchise) and it was an excellent pradigm shift in the telling of Samus adventures.

I played it for the first time at this years E3 and I walked away confused, and slightly curious about Samus past. Now Metroid Other M has been released.

I've now played the game for about 3 hours and I've got to say--I'm on the fence. Part of me dislikes the reveal of Samus's past and character, and part of my enjoys the reveal. The mystery of Samus was always so much more compelling to me than the truth--at least I think so.

The thing that striked me unexpectantly when I first started playing Other M was Samus voice. I know a LOT of people dislike it, but I actually think it's totally applicable and fitting. It's certainly not Oscar worthy by any means, but I think it's very fitting for her character.

See I've always felt that the Metroid experience was one of adventure in solitude, with a dash of meloncholly and creepiness therein. Samus's voice--for the first time being heard--seems actually correct tonally to my ear. She's not happy. She's also not a screaming, raging beyotch who wants you to "suck it down". She's a strong, lonely woman who seems to be searching for herself in these abandoned, otherworldly caverns. Or perhaps she's trying to run away from something and space is the furthest away from something (or someone). I find it very fitting.

The gameplay is so hit and miss right now. I really dislike being rooted to the ground when going in first-person mode, but I mostly enjoy the other forms of combat. I dislike the scanning but I enjoy the exploration. I dislike the automatic notifications of hidden items in the environment but I love being in that world.

I'm totally conflicted--and I'm absolutely sure that nostaligia has something to do with it--but I'll continue on to see how things pan out. Chin out, chest out...

I'm more getting an impression of vast insecurity and serious daddy issues, and I just can't reconcile that with the person that single handedly destroys space stations and entire planets. Lonely, sure, but this dear diary voice over is killing me. She actually says "confession time" at a point, like she's some 13 year old girl coming to grip with the fact she likes boys.

And then when pikachu's cousin made an appearance I nearly lost it.

I don't feel the typical isolation and lonliness...because shes not alone, she's got a commanding officer and a halo squad working with her.

I'm also not getting to exploration vibe either, because I'm constantly being told where to go, and all I'm traveling through is these crazy long hallways.

It took me about 3-4 hours to finally admit to myself that they actually made a crap metroid game. I really didn't want to believe it, but here you have it. The story is too poor, the gameplay is too poor and the controls are too shitty for me to call this anything but a crap game.

If it didn't have metroid in the title, no one would give it a second look. Probably not even a first look.

Super Metroid is my favorite game ever. I am just wondering when they will make a straight 2D Metroid again. Mortal Kombat finally got a clue, now if only Nintendo will with Metroid. A 2D game with 3D texturing would be awesome.

I have this sitting at home waiting to be played and after reading some of the stuff here I will wait on opening it.

Cutesy animals aren't exactly unprecedented in the Metroid series.

I'm actually finding the game to get better as I go along (especially because there's less of the bad story, so far anyway). I still fumble with the controls here and there but that's what happens when you make a 3D first/third-person game that has NES-controls.

Surrrsly? That is quite sad :/

Yeah, seriously. It's supposed to be some innocent looking creature that transforms into a monster, but its so impossible to take anything about the game seriously that it just seems kinda ridiculous.

Right now I'm stuck at a certain part and I just dont know if I have the will to continue. The puzzles and roadblocks in the game arent really any fun - theyre just there to impede your progress until you figure out some crazy random contrivance.

There is one scene in the game that is causing a lot of controversy, and I wonder how many of you guys have gotten that far.

You would probably know if you have.

The scene involves the character

I'd shit my pants upon the announcement of a new, 2D Metroid.
