Methods to encrypt / password protect external HDD

My friend wants a fast laptop with 500GB of external storage, as cheap as possible. We plan to buy a reasonable laptop with a 500GB HDD and then buy an SSD. The SSD will go into the laptop and the HDD which comes out will go into a 2.5" SATA > USB3 caddy.

He wants to protect the contents of the external HDD via a password or similar means. I know drives like the WD My Passport have encryption built in but as he wants to keep costs down, we won't be buying a dedicated external drive.

I do have experience with encryption but they have always been hardware based.

What options do we have for this? Would the external drive be tied to a single laptop or could it be accessed on any laptop as long as the password or some software was installed?

Cheers.

TrueCrypt. It's free and is respected. Either specify a long password that you'll never forget or use a keyfile that you'll keep in a safe place. The storage device with encrypted data on can be connected to any computer running truecrypt and accessed with the keyfile/password.
