Methods for reconnecting fans to GTX 670.

Hi all,

The fans on my Gigabyte GTX 670 apparently detached while in the computer, and the card overheated and shut down.

I took it to a repair shop to reattach the fans, and he claimed he couldn't do it, that the card was 'certainly' fried, and recommend I just replace it. Which I am willing to do if necessary, however, when I plug the monitor into the graphics card, it still seems to work (though obviously I cannot play any demanding games or I will overheat the card again). It seems like the card might still limp along for a bit if I can just get the fans up against it again.

I took a photo, but am still trying to work out how to attach it to a forum post.

So my questions are:

1) Is it safe, or feasible, to use either electrical tape or superglue of some form to reattach the plastic fans to the metal framing? If not, are there any other adhesives that might work? So long as nothing I am doing will risk my other hardware, the worst that can happen is that the card stays useless.

2) If not repairable, do you have any recommendations for a graphics card between $100-$200? I will need it to last about 2 years until I replace my full rig. I don't need to play the newest and greatest games on ultra-high settings, and would be totally happy to keep going with my current card if repair will work. Full specs are below.

Buy some "Goop" from hardware store. It's a general glue that dries tacky and hard, yet is malleable and can be pulled off. If there's none around, any general purpose glue will work too.

The cooler/sink looks prime for gluing two 120mm fans. I usually goop the four corners onto the heatsink fins. Then connect the fans to your MB fan headers, set your fan scaling and enjoy.

Sounds great. I think I could even just reattach the three fans that came with the card back to the sinks. I'll grab some and give it a try. Worst that happens is the card won't hold up - I just don't want to risk my other hardware. Thanks!

The reason I mentioned 120mm fans is that they have more flow and are quieter, granted you have some decent specimens. But if that's not where you're going, then yea just goop your fan shroud back on. Oh btw clean that dust off too.

I have a 670 that i am running with the factory fan shroud remove.d In its place I have 2x120 mm fans attached to the heatsink using nothing more than zipties. Have been running that way for close to 2 years and haven't had single problem. Glue would work but zipties can be quite secure too if tied down properly and I used 4 per fan. Much quieter and runs cooler than stock.

Prior to that i had an arctic cooling accelero on it and temps were good but i found the 120mm fan mod to be even better temp wise and quieter.

Probably would not look good if you have a windowed case tho if you care for looks.
