Hi all,

I was parking on the street yesterday in Downtown LA and the street sign said "2 hour parking limit" so I put money in the meter and thought to myself, "What if I need more time?" Can I come back in 2 hours and put more money in? Or am I limited to a maximum of 2 hours per day, and therefore could not put more money in?

I'm curious cause those who live in downtown LA know that parking is terrible (much like other large cities) and have a high presence of parking enforcement officers. One of my friends said that legally after 2 hours they can give you a ticket even if you put more money in, but I'm not sure about that.

edit: ok lets assume they don't mark your tires... but they see you come out and put more money in... can the meter maid give you a ticket?

I always thought you could as long as you put in more money, but maybe not..

In some cities they mark the tires, and will ticket it for having not moved from the spot, St. Louis does that.
If you move from one spot to another every 2 hours there's no 'death penalty' implied or enforced.

ok lets assume that they don't mark you tires... cause that's a dead giveaway that they are timing you. lets say that they don't mark your tires and you come back to put more money in the meter and they see you... can you get a ticket?

Hmmm I never thought of it that way... here in downtown Blacksburg, VA, I put more money in all the time... but this is a 40,000 people city with 30,000 students so I don`t think we have a parking problem :)

You just have to put more money in. I have never heard of getting a ticket for keeping your car in the same place.

In LA I think you can park there as long as you need to if you keep paying.

I've parked in 2 hour meter spaces all day plenty of times and have never had a problem. I've also only seen the parking enforcement mark tires if it's a 2 hour parking area with no meters.

When was the last time you tried to park on-campus between 10 and 2? :p

2 hour limit means exactly that. If they didn't care how long you park there why would they put a limit on the meter?

Heh it's not that bad even then. I like cutting people off while they are waiting for someone to pull out. I usually get a few sorority bitches or frat douches crying about it but oh well, it wont take any longer than a few seconds for me to get over breaking their hearts... I park at the middle parking lot closest to Pamplin.

I have never, ever gotten a spot there between 9 AM and 4 PM. Most of the time, if I don't show up at 7:30 and get my pick of spaces, I'm in the farthest back corner of the lot facing the Chem/Phys building. :(

I mean that the parking enforcement doesn't physically come out of the car and use chalk or marker to indicate that you were parked in a space at a particular time.

In Chicago, you will (at the least) get a ticket ($50.00-$100.00). Worse case, they'll tow your car (~$275.00 to get it back) ... it depends on where the meter is located).

You are not allowed to "feed the meters." The rational presented is that the metered spaces are for shoppers or people that are trying to do business in that neighborhood.

Given that all-day parking is $12.00-$24.00, feeding the meters would (if it wasn't enforced) cost much less and the workers / employees would take all the spaces.

Don't even think of feeding the meter in most places around Chicago: It'll cost you .... and they WILL collect.

I'm gonna have to say yes they can ticket you.

I mean what part of "2 hr parking" don't you understand? Is the sign there for amusement? As in funny ha-ha or funny ho-ho? 2 hr parking.

In Ann Arbor, all the meters say, "[X] hour parking limit, regardless of deposit of additional coins."

So I'd say no.
