i just heard the meteor hit russia buildings and injured hundreds of people. my question is it the same meteor that news sites talked about few days ago? the one that is about the size of a football field.

is it the same one? or different one?

Different one, the meteor that is flying by today is much larger than the one that exploded above Russia.

They are saying the one that exploded above Russia was only 10 tons. The one that is missing us is 140,000+ tons.

Lol no. A football field size meteor hitting a city would be a catastrophic disaster with tens of thousands dead.

It's a coincidence. The one that will pass by later today has zero chance of hitting earth, and its closest approach takes it past the southern hemisphere.

The one that hit Russia was much smaller and wasn't discovered beforehand.

Think about it. The media spoke for weeks about a space object that won't hit the Earth yet completely ignores the ones that will hit the Earth (and in this case damage property/injury people).

yeah whats up with that? and it cause confusion thinking its the same one.

at first i heard about the news that hit russia building i thought it was the same one talked about few days ago.

then went to cnn front page and see the video talked about the football field size meteor while the story about meteor that hit russia building story is co exist in same front page. makes me wonder if its the same story because if it co exist in same page it would be different story.

so i came here for clarfication.

yeah why this smaller meteor that hit russia building wasnt talked about few days ago? it has impact yet it wasnt talked about in the media. did scientist not seeing it coming?

The 2-4m object was small enough to stay undetected.

But I'm interested in the flying direction of both. The bigger one might have debris flying near it.

It's not like anyone can politely ask meteors to fly by or hit us on different days to prevent confusion. Nearly every news article I've come across has gone to great lengths to explain that there are two different meteors, often in the title of the article. It's not that hard to keep straight. Just a concidence.

The one that hit Russia this morning was far too small to see in space. No one could have seen it coming until it hit our atmosphere and started to burn up. It was boulder-sized, not the size of a football field.

Phil Plait of BadAstronomy.com wrote:

"For one thing, this occurred about 16 hours before DA14 passes. At 8 kilometers per second that’s nearly half a million kilometers away from DA14. That puts it on a totally different orbit. For another, from the lighting, time of day, and videos showing the rising Sun, it looks like this was moving mostly east-to-west. I may be off, but that’s how it looks. DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, so any fragment of that rock would also appear to move south-to-north."

So it seems they're not traveling in the same direction and are unrelated objects.

I completely glossed over the word "field" in your response and had prepared a witty rejoinder to the stupid contention that a football sized meteor would leave thousands dead. Now I realize I'm the idiot. Ah, Fridays.

No, they are not connected. It came from a totally different direction than the large meteor that will just miss us.

So there's no way this one over Russia could have been related to this near-Earth asteroid? It's not debris, or an object whose path was altered by this big fucker? Just seems like a weird coincidence.
