It's pretty good. I'm happy James Hetfield didn't even attempt to match Dio's vocal range.

Well great now I'm listening to a bunch of Ronnie James Dio stuff on youtube again. There goes productivity :). Rainbow's Stargazer kills me every single time I hear it. Amazing.

Good selection of Rainbow's most metallic songs and about as decent a performance as you could expect from Metallica today. Hammett kind of pooped on the Tarot Woman portion with the wah silliness, though.

Either way, I think this is the best thing Metallica has put out in MANY years.

The Dio years of Rainbow was my first band obsession in my life. And still today, those albums sound so damn good.

I love how so many of the comments on YouTube are like "New Metallica, so awesome!", with no clue as to the original music. Yeah, it's awesome because they are covering Rainbow.

And it doesn't hold a candle to the original. The vocals have been mentioned, but also, Hammett and Hetfield just cannot produce the melodies that Blackmore perfected.

I think metallica made them better. But I've never been a huge fan of his Rainbow years. His Black Sabbath days were hit and miss, but he really didn't shine until he launched his solo career.

And while he wasn't as good as ozzy was with black sabbath; I'd say he more than makes up for that with Mob Rules, Country Girl, and Heaven and Hell.

Ritchie Blackmore >> Kirk Hammett

yes yes Blackmore FTW lucky to have seen him a few times back in the day, still love Rainbow

I never saw Ritchie Blackmore in concert but I did see Dio (Heaven & Hell) in 2008. It was very, very awesome.

Definitely, I hope you didn't interpret my post to mean that his performance was better (just remembered that "shitting all over" something is actually considered a sign of superiority). Powell vs Ulrich too, for that matter; those drum fills in Kill the King are classic and Ulrich doesn't even come close.

The problem with covers is that people expect the artist to perform it exactly like it was originally performed. But when they do that; you might ask yourself why they bothered to make a cover in the first place.

I just like good music and I don't care how it was made.

It actually was performed very similarly to the originals (hence why they picked the four heaviest and fastest Rainbow songs), just not as good.

I like it when they try to play it as well as the original. That's probably why my favorite Stargazer cover is from Dream Theater. When I had a chance to talk to James LaBrie, I complimented him on the vocals.
