Their earliest albums are by far superior to the crap they're putting out today. You need not buy anything released after their self titled album (the black one).

Ride the Lightning is very good. Metallica is one of those bands that is truely talented and knows how to play and write. That's hard to find these days.

I still think the best is the Black Album.... :p
My Friend of Misery, Wherever I May Roam, Enter Sandman, Of Wolf and Man, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters.....Every song on that album rocked.

While it is true that their pre-90's work is the best music they have put out yet.
I cannot say that everything that they have released after the black album is crap.

Can you honestly say that none of these songs listed are any good?
Until It Sleeps, King Nothing, The House Jack Built, Hero Of The Day, Bleeding Me, Fuel, Low Man's Lyric, The Memory Remains, The Unforgiven II,
Blitzkrieg, So What, Die die my darling, Turn the page, Astronomy, Tuesday's Gone, Whiskey in the Jar, No Leaf Clover.

Now i can understand suggesting to not buy the load/reload...... albums but there are definetly some great songs there

If you like Ride the Lightning you really need to get And Justice for All..... that album really rocks. Make sure you listen(or download) "To Live is to Die". One of their most underrated songs.

With the exception of No Leaf Clover, those are all cover songs of other bands work.

Refused to support them after they funded RIAA and got Napster shut down.

Metallica = Unforgiven ;)

Only have their Black album, anything since is not worth getting imho.

I don't blame them for supporting the RIAA because they were brainwashed into thinking that they were losing money. (which they were) I don't exactly think of Metallica as a bunch of computer geeks, so they wouldn't know what an MP3 was if it weren't for the RIAA bringing it to their attention. ;)

I watched a special on TLC a week or so. They had to declare bankruptcy when they had one of their best albums out, CrazySexyCool. They were getting 8 cents for every album sold, and then still having to pay their managers, production cost for videos, and taxes....They were getting about 50k a piece per year and it was a multiplatinum album. I regret feeding into the greedy record labels and RIAA by purchasing this and giving them only 8 cents on a 15 dollar cd....

No offense to Metallica, but they smoked up their last brain cells when they sided with someone who is giving them less than a penny on the dollar for all their artistic work...

I'm not sure what timeline you are talking about but Metallica now writes, produces and records their own music. I BELIEVE(I might be wrong) they own Elektra. At one time they might have gotten 8 cents on a CD but I doubt that is the case today.

Yep, they're one of the few band who have been really diligent in keeping control of thier careers, marketing and music. Of course, this might have something to do with the fact that they weren't a "conceived" band like TLC.

So which 3 dumb@sses signed a contract saying they would only get 8 cents an album? I take that back, IIRC, the bands manager, Pebbles, signed the deal which basically screwed the band, but made shure she got rich (that's why TLC later fired her I believe). So they got screwed by their manager, not the label.

Don't paint the labels as evil when every band knows what they are getting into when they sign an album deal.

As far as Napster goes... they chose to fight an 800 pound gorilla<sp?>, instead of compling w/a simple request, and lost. Stupid management, not 'Tallica, spelled the end of Napster.

RtL is a great album but MoP is by far their finest, IMHO. :)

I think Call of the Ktulu is probably their most awesome song, with Orion being a close second. MOP is great of course....

The Black album was the **official** point of sell out. They wanted to have the #1 album in the world to be the greatest metal band of all time and on par with Zepplin, so they hired a slick producer, made music videos, started playing MTV awards shows and generally became a neutered shell of what made them a great metal band. It only took them time to become the mouthpiece for corporate music.

Everything before that album is hard and fun... everything after is hit or miss.

<-- got to play lars' drums when they were recording the black album. The band was not in the studio at the time. My brother got to hang out with them.
