If you're going to make a blanket statement.. it's "we're going to do whatever the fvck we feel like - we're pioneers of this genre" should do it.

I agree with the tribute to Burton. I'm not sure how much of a part he had in writing the song, I've heard different extremes. From, the other three (James, Kirk, & Lars) writing the song as a tribute; to Cliff writing the song entirely. As well as: Cliff wrote the song, but the othre three finished it up and made it an album track in tribute. I personally lean towards that last one.

This is taken from encycmet.com-
"Once Lars said in an interview, the song "To Live Is To Die" is actually based on a number of riffs that Cliff wrote a couple of years ago. Metallica thought it would be cool if there would be something written by Cliff on the "... And Justice For All" album. So in this way he took part on that record."

"Cliff Burton himself said these words once.

"When a man lies he murders"
"Some part of the world"
"These are the pale deaths"
"Which men miscall their lives"
"All this I cannot bear"
"To witness any longer"
"Cannot the kingdom of salvation"
"Take me home?"
------------------------------------------------

Edit: Fixed up a bit, added some stuff.

My guess is you were never a Metallica fan to begin with and you're still pissy about someone protecting their IP.

I think every song means something different to everyone. A song's meaning is influenced by the context in which you heard it. What's important is what it means to you and you only.

If you look at the CD, Burton is given writing credit for the song (along with James and Lars).

Or he's just a cry baby for his favorite Internet service Napster being "gone". Oh no ! I must hate for that !!! Nevermind the fact that they are talented musicians (you don't forget how to ride a bike) nor the fact that they had every right to do what they did. Let's hate them because we don't agree with them taking it all away.

Does the word "Metallica" being used in a sentence always have to bring out the anti-Metallica zealots? Jebus, let people like what they like. Opening your mouth and insulting it isn't persuading them to think like you, it just makes you look like an idiot.

Don't pay attention to the obvious flame bait by the trolls. Anyway I think other people touched on it here already. Cliff wrote a lot of the song and then the other guys (Het, Lars) finished it up and put it on the next album. To Live is To Die, to me means that in order to really understand and appreciate life you have to experience death...not your death obviously but perhaps the death of someone very close or influencial to you. Although reading the words more one could conclude that Cliff felt that he was not truely alive and that he could no longer "bear witness" to all the lies in the world, therefore to him he could only truely live after he died.......whoa deep ;)

Get it right, they didn't start selling out till the black album, and they didn't go at it fully till the one after that.. Load was it? *shrug* I don't even follow them anymore. Their first four albums were absolutely legendary though, you can't take that away from them.

Since Cliff wrote the lyrics, it is incorrect to say that those were written as a tribute to him. The song on a whole, yes, but if you just mean the lyrics, it seems to be about lying (duh) and how everytime a man lies, he destroys a part of the world; eg- his life. Each lie defiles and corrupts our lives just a little bit more. He's sick and tired of these "pale deaths," in other words, they are not very noticeable and easy overlooked, and people lie even more to erase the previous lies, and so begins a vicious circle that slowly kill our senses of well-being and sanity.

(I used those lyrics as a quotations to analyze in an English paper)
