The problem is that people compare any new Metallica stuff with Ride/Master/Kill.

That's BS and unfair to Metallica. They aren't 22 years old anymore.

Compare Load or Reload with cd's of their contemporaries at the time: Soundgarden or Tool or Clutch or even Pantera. Metallica is supposed to sound exactly the same as they sounded in 1984, but other hard rock acts can sound like ass and it's OK?

What current hard rock CD is better than Death Magnetic? I could care less how DM compares to something Metallica did over 20 years ago. It's interesting trivia but that's about it.

Tool, Soundgarden and Clutch kick the living shit out of Metallica's offerings from Load & beyond. I could never get into Pantera, but the nearly unanimous admiration for this band among music lovers tells me that it's just me.

nothing Soundgarden ever made was worth listning to

hell St Anger is better then their whole catalog

:Q

Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are good albums.

2 more days. Unless the actual CD somehow sounds better than all the "leaks", something I really doubt, then  It's too bad, this isn't great, but it's not terrible either - probably their best music since the black album, but it's easily the worst mastered music I've ever heard. It's so fatiguing to listen to I can barely make it through one song before I have to rest.

I gotta say, I'm really liking this album. Favorite so far is My Apocalypse, but other than the occasional vocal that makes me squint one eye, it's pretty damn solid.

Admittedly, they have me anyway. If I'm honest with myself, I know I'm someone who will absolutely buy every album they ever put out, no matter how it sounds, for better or for worse. I don't even really have a choice in the matter. The band fundamentally altered the course of my musical existence back in '89 and, I don't know, there's this almost familial "I owe it to them" thing I've got going on. But still, I've been disappointed like so many others for the last few albums. Sure there are -- there absolutely are -- some great songs on those discs, but they just haven't had the feel of what was Metallica from the black album back. This one starts what I hope is a journey back to those days.

This album is no ...And Justice for All, believe me. Honestly I don't think we'll ever get another masterpiece like that out of this band. But there are echoes to be sure, and for me, to hear Lars banging as fast as he can hit a snare -- a real snare -- and to hear Kirk get out there and open up again... well, it's definitely enough.

Look we all like different things, to me the sounds of pigs being slaughtered sounds better then Chris Cornell. His voice is simply horrendous

You sound like the many teenagers who simply lose the connection with people once they exceed 25 years of age. However, once you get older and smarter you'll realize just how stupid you were when you were a kid.

Superunknown is critically acclaimed. It debuted at #1 on the billboard charts and had 5 singles. It's also recognized among audiophiles as a well produced album. Nothing out of this world, but in this day and age one that isn't compressed totally to shit is remarkable.

As for Death Magnetic, it's a really good album but has the worst production quality I've ever heard. Whoever is behind its production either had a Bose system or Apple iBuds. At that, you'd have to have years worth of compacted wax clogging your ears not to hear how shitty this sounds.

I'm 33, grew up listening to Metallica, Megadeth, the regular stuff and I loved it. I stopped liking Megadeth a long time ago, and didn't like Metallica's albums after the Black Album, other than a few tracks off of each subsequent album. I really enjoyed S&M, but I like classical/orchestral music. I like the instrumental track on DM, but there are simply bands with more energy and drive. If I want to listen to pre Black Album Metallica, I have the CDs. I just don't "feel" Death Magnetic like I have their other albums.
My favorite instrumental heavy track is Trivium's "The Crusade".

Metallica has been promoting Death Magnetic as a bridge between Justice and the Black album...while it is nice to hear elements of their old sound on the new album, Load/ReLoad Hetfield vocals are still the order of the day...Ulrich's drumming is becoming more and more distracting with each album...and Kirk's solos are getting repetitive.

Don't get me wrong...Death Magnetic is a good album...certainly better than the little St. Anger experiment.

I actually enjoyed Metallica's detour with Load & ReLoad...and Garage, Inc...those albums, while not classic Metallica, at least had some heart and energy.

Seems like they made this album to satisfy fans, but their heart doesn't seem in it anymore.

Does anyone have a legitimate link where I can listen to sound clips, at least? Amazon has nothing yet. And I don't have Itunes.

I have heard most of the songs on the album, and I think it is amazing. I agree that unfortunately James' vocal and lyrical prowess does not seem to be what it used to be, but some of the music on this album is pretty amazing and once again shows a new direction for Metallica.

My favorite song right now is All Nightmare Long. Some seriously sick shit.

All the songs are on Youtube.
