STATEMENT FROM THE MEMBERS OF METALLICA

Metallica regrets to announce that after 14 years as Metallica's bass
player, Jason Newsted has chosen to leave the band.

Jason Newsted: "Due to private and personal reasons, and the physical damage
that I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I
love, I must step away from the band. This is the most difficult decision of
my life, made in the best interest of my family, myself, and the continued
growth of Metallica. I extend my love, thanks, and best wishes to my
brothers: James, Lars, and Kirk and the rest of the Metallica family,
friends, and fans whom have made these years so unforgettable."

Newsted joined Metallica from Flotsam And Jetsam in the fall of 1986 after
the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton. He participated in the recording
of 6 Metallica albums (?And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, Re-Load,
Garage Inc., and S&M) which have sold over 55 million copies worldwide to
date. In addition, he played on numerous worldwide tours to millions of fans
representing over 1000 gigs in all. While with Metallica, the band won
countless awards including 5 Grammy Awards and 2 MTV Video Music Awards.

James Hetfield: "Playing with someone who has such unbridled passion for
music will forever be a huge inspiration. On stage every night, he was a
driving force to us all, fans and band alike.

His connection will never be broken."

Lars Ulrich: "We part ways with Jason with more love, more mutual respect,
and more understanding of each other than at any other point in the past.
James, Kirk and I look forward to embracing the next chapter of Metallica
with both a huge amount of appreciation for the last 14 years with Jason and
the excitement of rising to the challenges that lay ahead to make Metallica
shine brighter than ever."

In the spring, Metallica will begin writing and recording a new studio album
with release sometime in late 2001 or early 2002.

Kirk Hammett: "Jason is our brother. He will be missed."

======================

Any thoughts on this? I don't know if they'll ever be the same.

wow, that's really crappy - i can't believe that jason would actually want to leave the band...and i don't know how the band will go on without him in any sort of the same way. a sad day in the rock music scene to say the least.

Jason Newsted was the "loser" of the group as far as I'm concerned. All of the other members would talk to people, were really nice, but Newsted, up until maybe the last year or so, never came out of his shell. I liked Cliff Burton as a bassist a lot better. Not to mention overall I think the band were better songwriters at the time. Cliff helped write some of the coolest metallica songs ever. I hope they replace Newsted with someone more creative, who can also help to write songs. Maybe Metallica will get back to their roots. I really loved the S&M stuff they did, it was refreshing.

I can't say I'm sad to see Jason Newsted go, I'd almost say I'm happy. The only downside to that is a new bass player meshing with the band.

Yeah, Metallica sucks. From garage pioneers to money-hungry bastards.

I'll never buy another of their albums anyway, so who cares who plays bass for them.

They all suck, but Jason is not close to being the loser of the group. Try Lars, one of the most overrated drummers I've ever heard.

I'd be curious as to just how much the other guys agree with Lars on the whole napster thing. It's odd, cause we don't see many comments from them regarding the issue. I kind of get the feeling that Lars is a bit of a crybaby, especially after watching "A Year and a Half in the life..." Everyone else would get into the studio around 10-12ish, and Lars would show up at 8pm, with no reason for being late.

I do agree its not the same band since Cliff was killed, they still rock, but the music DID change. I'd still like to get around to seeing them in concert, but for some reason, after losing so many "fans" due to the napster incident, their concerts still sell out in 10-15minutes

Drummer from smashing pumpkins is the best ever? Hmm... I honestly haven't noticed any extraordinary drumming from SP but I'll have to listen more closely. My vote for best active drummer would be Danny Carey from Tool... the man is insanely good. I'm biased but even on this issue, if I wasn't, he'd still get my vote.

Best drummer is from SP? LOL, that's hilarious. Gene Hoglan (Death, et al) takes the cake. Doc (Vader), Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Grip Inc), and Vinnie Paul (Pantera) are all top-notch also, and far superior to the Smashing Pumpkins percussionist.

I hope Metallica goes down in flames. They sold out, forgot there roots, and have their collective heads up their arses.

I was a big fan for a long time (since I saw em at The Monsters of Rock show in 87'), until they started that Napster crap, sued their fans, and Lars opened hi big stupid mouth, inserted his foot and let everyone realize what a completely out-of-the-loop Ahole he is.

Metallica is suck!!! :|

I'd have to say Danny from Tool for best drummer - but then again, who else did you expect me to say? ;)

I may not like Vader, but when Napalm does make me listen to it (;)), I do appreciate the technical skills of the drummer. Certainly better than Metallica or SP.

OH SH|T! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll probably get flamed heavily, but Metallica is my favorite band.

Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail
once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
never begins it, never, but once engaged...
never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage

I'm not too sad to here this news. I would like to actually see a new Metallica album, something from them that is original, but I would also like to see them go down. I have mixed feelings for the band and their music. It's been a while since they've come out with a 'new' album with never heard before music, so we'll see what happens.

Napalm I was thinkning Vinnie Paul from Pantera as well. He can can drum with the best of them.

As far as Cliff Burton - he was responsible for some of Metallica's best work IMHO. He was a classical music major and it shows in Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning. It's because of him that S&M turned out the way that it did. Listen to that S&M and tell me which songs sounded best along with the symphony. Now, look and see what ones were wrote when Burton was in the band.

I find it funny the way so many people attack Metallica for suing Napster. I like and use Napster, but I would have a very tough time arguing that it does not lead to huge amounts of wholesale copyright violation and outright theft from artists. I for one think Metallica showed a lot of courage in taking such an unpopular stand.
