Metal Piece on P4PE?

What is the metal piece on my mouse port (or keyboard, not looking at the port right now) that pops up over it? Its not connected to the port and its easily bendable... what is it and what is its purpose? Can i remove it?

IIRC it's for grounding the socket against the backplate of the case.
