Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance the first major PC game to require a DVD-ROM?

Ships on 03/25/2003
I'll believe it when it's finally in my hands. 😛 The original release date was some time in late February. And I think the remake of "Riven" came on DVDROM, but I guess it's debatable if that was considered 'major'.

nice, finally dont have to switch cds.

I agree, w/ the exception of Encarta on DVD-Rom by MS, not enough s/w is available on DVD.

If you have an ATI card you will not be happy with it. There are alot of reports that ATI is not supported. Graphics are really choppy, and full of artifacts! Here is a message from the Konami forums:

There's a very big problem for radeon card users on MGS2 pc. Maybe because it is directly mod from XBOX version which is Geforce optimized, the in game quality sucks even I am using a RADEON 9700 card with my Athlon 2700+ system. In the rain scene of the game just started, the images are just like oil paint. I don't know if this is the problem of the radeon card drivers or the game alone instead. Hopefully Konami and ATI would do something since I nearly got no problems for my radeon card in other games. Thanks for your kindly attention.

I think we have a problem. Since this is a direct port over from Xbox, there is a low chance that there would be patches for all these. Try contacting ATi and see if they can help

Not looking good! Oh well, Splinter Cell is better!!

I think it is a good idea and has been far too long in coming.

I personally hate switching cd's around in games.

definetly not cool that it doesnt support ATI cards....i hope ATI or Konami put out a patch or something to make this great game playable on the PC

I just caught this over at the Rage3D forums, specifically this thread:

---
MrB:
ATI is working with Konami to develop a patch to fix the issues.

CATALYST Maker:
MrB beat me to it but let me double what he said
We are working with Konami to get a patch to resolve the issues, this is expected shortly
---

As far as I can tell (not a regular reader, sorry), CATALYST Maker works for ATI? If so, there's a little more light for ATI owners. 🙂

Riven did come on DVD-ROM, though it was "only" five CD-ROMs instead of the apparent nine or ten for this game. And "major" or not, Riven still kicks ass. The Myst series was great.

i've read that most cutscenes are done by the game engine and aren't pre-rendered movies. my question then is, where the heck does 8 gigs of space go? audio can't take up that much even if uncompressed. maybe it's just a protection scheme.
