Metal Gear Solid 2 Story Discussion (Spoilers!)

Wow. I just beat this roller coaster ride of a game. What does everyone think of it, especially the story line?

There's one thing that bothered me. How is Rose pregnant? Weren't the Snakes and Raiden sterile? Or, is this going back to the life will triumph thing? That explanation bothered me, reminding me of Jurassic Park. Am I missing something?

How does everyone feel about Raiden? I can understand why Hideo made the decision, but it was just disappointing. Raiden's a whiny loser, and it felt painful to play along, because something seemed wrong with Campbell and his constant "he is not part of the simulation."

What else... I remember reading awhile back that the ending took place on top of the World Trade Center. Was that just a baseless rumor, because it seems that the courthouse makes more sense story-wise than the WTC.

Um... Liquid reveals why he chose Ocelot to host his hand, but why did Ocelot agree to have Liquid attached? He's obviously in pain, and wants Liquid to "get out of my mind!"

Who was the mother of the Snakes? (There has to a birth mother, even if her genes weren't involved.)

Why did Solidus kill Raiden's parents?

Why Shalashaska (sp)? Is that Ocelot's real name, or just a fake name?

I was replaying the tanker episode, and realized that Ocelot referred to the Patriots as the "La-le-lu-li-lo" (that is so much fun to say). I know I've heard of the (/me says the fun word out loud) before outside of MGS2. Where would I have heard of them? Are they a standard conspiracy theory group? Perhaps from Deus Ex?

Just a comment; was anyone else really creeped out by what the colonel does during the end? That was one of the creepest things I've ever done in a videogame, when he was calling, or if you called him.

Oh well. I'm sure I'll find some more questions as I replay. Post here if you have any answers (ha!), or more unanswered questions.

I have played some of it, but I watched a friend beat it.

I agree with the Raiden thing, we made fun of that wank throughout the whole game.
Snake: "*grumble* I need a cigarette."
Raiden: "Can I have a soda?"

Something bothers me about the storyline in general. It was developing nicely until the last 30 minutes of the game, then it just went f**king nuts. It's like they had all sorts of cool ideas flowing, but in the end just couldn't figure out what to do with them all. I dunno.

One thing is for sure, making the player fight an entire fleet of RAYs was not nice of them.

Well, Raiden seems a little better if you think of him as Dr Watson watching Sherlock Holmes. You should read Gamespot's feature on MGS2.

I liked the sword fight with Solidus more than the Fist Fight with Liquid.

As for battling a fleet of RAYs, at first I thought it would be incredible, but 5 Rays weren't as hard as one REX.

I was also disappointed that you couldn't kill yourself in the end to get ending number two. I thought it would make sense to break from from "your role."

I still enjoyed it just as much as the first one. I beat it with a friend too, and I looked at him when it was over and said "wouldn't it kick ass if we were halfway through?" I guess I'll just have to wait for the next Metal Gear game.

1. Did the ending (after the credits) suggest aliens? when snake is talking to otacon saying all the patriots are dead you hear this spaceshipe (thats what i take it to be) whizz by anyone else catch that?

2. Was Rose a Patriot?

3. WTF happened to ocelot and RAY? I though when snake said they probably gave him a fake location i could not stop laughing for some reason.

4. WTF happened to ARSENAL GEAR? it just flew away?

Raiden is not sterile, he's not one of the Big Boss clones (Solidus was saying how him and Solid and Liquid were sterile)

I don't think Ocelot got liquids arm knowing that Liquid would take control of him. I think he did it cuz didn't his hand or arm get chopped off in MGS1?

Actually I thought it was really broke the suspension of disbelief when the colonel and rose started saying things that let you know you were playing a videogame ("you should sit so close to the screen" etc)



Another question, so was the Rose that you spoke w/ via codec the whole time an AI or was it the REAL Rose that was at the end? Cuz the codec Rose became all evil at the end so why would Jack become all nicey to Rose at the end again?

So was the colonel some AI/Alien thing or what?

Haha, I love this game and I got most of it down. The La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo are the patriots. The end with the weird acting colonel was after Snake installed the Virus into the GW system, the colonel was really an AI that was formed by the GW. When the virus was installed he started saying all this weird sh*t. The Rose that was being a bitch to you at the end was the GW acting like Rose, trying to confuse you and make you finish the objectives.
Rose was a patriot, she was a spy that was sent to spy/kill Jack AKA Raiden but then she falls in love, she mentions this. Solidus was not all EVIL, he wanted to destroy the patriots and restore freedom to the US. If you didn't know the patriots were a group of 12 men that led the US, they would make the public hear what they wanted to hear, rig elections so their choice of president would win, etc. Oh and at the end when Otacon reveals that the patriots died 100 years ago, this will be answered in MGS3.
