So I was just finally getting around to playing a few rounds of this beta.

I gotta say, it's pretty damn terrible. I played 4 rounds and honestly have no desire to ever play it again. It is just a slow paced, boring game with very loose controls. There is nothing in this game that screams fun at all. The feedback when you hit other players or how much damage you are taking is hardly anything at all. The sound in the game really sucks IMO as well.

Oh and just getting the beta to work was a PITA. I had to DL the beta, then a 400mb patch on p2p which took forever, then another small patch.

Then you have to create a konami ID and a game ID, both which can't be the same, and your password for 1 HAS to be numbers and HAS to include 1 number in your name. Then on top of that, when you start the game, you have to create a character and give it a name. It was just a tedious mess.

I really hope the gameplay isn't really representative of MGS4 gameplay, because thus far all this beta has done for me is make me not even care about MGS4.

I still care about MGS4, but I too really am not feeling the beta. Maybe it just takes good maps and great team players on both sides to make for a good match. It's definitely meant to be played slower, as it going to turn a lot of people away, possibly me.
But as long as it plays pretty much the same for single player as the last games have, then I'm set.

I think it has a lot of potential, though I'm never dying to play it. CQC can be pretty cool (knocking someone out and shooting them in the head is always satisfying), and...yeah, well I don't have time to go over anything else. Generally you find cooler things to do the better you get.

But it really is pretty clunky. I don't see why it's so hard to grab someone. My guy always stops to grab, and usually misses.

If they get some animations worked out, the clunkiness smoothed out, and tweak the gameplay, it could be at least above average (and decently fun). As for being too slow, that's just how it is.

But I doubt this represents MGS4 at all. ;)

What console? I started the download when I went to bed last night. Plan on trying it out tonight once I get home. Sounds like I got more downloads ahead? Graphic look good?

it's only out on 1 console - the ps3.

the graphics are okay nothing special, but who cares how good the graphics are if the gameplay sucks. i noticed quite a bit of slowdown as well when I was crawling under some crates when it forced into the first person mode.

I played it for a little bit Sunday night while the wife sat and watched me. The first thing we both noticed was the absolutely horrible sound effects. Even the wife commented on it, which means it's really, really bad. The "death scream" sounds like they ripped it from some cheesy, low-budget PS2 game, and all the sounds in general sound canned.

The auto aim only seems to work about 20% of the time, while the other 80% is an exercise in frustration with the camera whipping around everywhere and you completely losing your bearings. All the while, the enemy you were aiming for is standing 10 feet from you, at which point he comes up and tries to hit/grab you, which doesn't work 90% of the time.

When in free aim mode, the controls are loose and floaty. I hate to break it to all the game developers out there, but after a person has played CoD4 online and used those controls, you have to match it or go home, because CoD4 is the watermark for how the controls should feel.

The one level I played wasn't the best I'd ever seen. I didn't see anybody using cover, it was mainly everyone running around. There were a few people crouching around in boxes, but the level was so small it was kind of pointless to try and move around in them. Also, in the little bit I played, I don't think the normal Metal Gear Solid weapon switching mechanic used in the single-player translates well into the multiplayer, but it's probably just something I'd have to get used to.

Overall, with the state the beta is in right now, it sucks. However, it has loads of potential, and I hope to get a little more playtime in and post in the beta boards to give them some feedback. Maybe everyone just needs to get used to the style of it, and games might be better once people actually start trying to sneak around and be stealthy.

EDIT: Fixed numerous horrible grammar mistakes because I typed in a hurry :).

im starting to think that they are including this game for free w/MGS4 instead of having it as a standalone product because Konami too realizes that it just isn't that good.

and blurred i agree w/what you said 100% about the auto aim and the sound, as well as the controls in general.

but while i don't want to compare this DIRECTLY to an FPS, I do agree COD4 (and Halo) are the pinnacles of how an fps should control. but for a 3rd person shooter, I think GoW nailed it perfectly as well.
