met power supply problem when install your mobo? look inside

I have an enlight case with premier 300wtt power supply. It worked well before I changed the mobo.

I pulled a soyo6vbe out and got a aopen 6xbc deal at anandtech. yesterday when I put everything on the board, the power supply didn't work.

The symptom is: the power supply has strange buzz and the fan inside the ps rotated slower than usual. the additional fan in the case didn't rotate either but made a bit motion there.

what will be the problem? the power supply or the mobo?

When ypu onstalled your new mob into your case you probably shorted a trace to ground on the underside of the mobo. If you can, remove the mobo from the case and try to power it up. Check the underside of the mobo for tell tale scratches from stand offs that do not match the mounting holes.

Make sure you didn't flip the voltage switch on the power supply to 220v. I've done that, and it makes the fan spin very slowly.

DaddyG & Sacotool,

great thanks. i will check if there is any short. I think I have made sure the voltage is 110v.

I will tell you if that works.

hi, daddyG,

I take the mobo outside and it works. but when I put it back it doesn't. I tried many times and find that if I put on all the screw for the mobo or if I fasten the sound card or modem tightly(they are all on the one side of the mobo), the power supply doesn't work. How strange? when I loose the screws of hte sound card and modem, it works. seems to me that this mobo can't be bended or it will cause the ps stop work?
I have tried to remove the stand underside the mobo on the side of isa modem and sound card but no help to resolve the problem.

Is it the problem in mobo or in the case? the power supply is good, i think.

I'm confused. If you take your mobo out, it works. Are your peripheral cards in when the motherboard is out (jut not support bracket screws, obviously).

Put it in your case and connect only your CPU, fan, and power supply. You should get fans spinning and a beep code (for no RAM or video card). Or if you have a new system it will indicate with D-LEDs which are really convenient. Then add RAM and you should get a different beep code, and maybe a different D-LED. Then add your vid card.

Tell me how it works for ya.

guys why keep bumping it till MAMAX wakes up, it does sound like somthing in the case is messin it up, or shorting somthing. All i can suggest is take all the case mounts out, every standoff, except one, and try with those plastic clips, then when you mount the cards they should stiffin up the mobo enough. then try.
mamax, tell us abit more about the sys, the cpu, the vid card, are what will help the most, and any additional drives in there. waiting on that info...

the reason i bump this thread is that i am the mobo seller to him. So i do want this issue resolved for i wouldnt want an unhappy customer. 🙂

hi,
guys, and akaz, thanks for your help.

I resolved the problem at 2:00 o'clock. yes, it is the problem of the enlight case. there are extra stand behind the mobo which shorts it. after I remove them and only left the 6 required for this mobo, the mobo is ok.

thanks for everybody and akaz🙂

Another happy camper. I miss the old AT days when 3 screws and a bunch of plastic stand-offs was all that was needed.

I want to make a conclusion of this:

when you put a new mobo into the case, and the power supply has some problem:
first, check the right voltage for it: 110
second, check any short, especially underside the mobo, like stand-offs, take away any extra stand-off.

hope this is helpful for others.

I like anandtech.
