I received a strange popup this afternoon. I was working online and suddenly a popup appeared with "Messenger Service" in the title bar. It had a very strange message, something like "Message from Orlando, Florida to 200.42.65.108. Your number is 0090..." Where the f***k did this come from?!? I don't have any messenger software installed in my system, and this looks like spam of some sort.

I thaught that was it, but a few hours ago, the popup appeared again. This time, I wasn't even online.

the thing is, your port 139 is open, thus allowing you to receive the messages from outsides machines and computers. as BingBongWongFooey said, it is part of a new spamming campaign/technique in trying to get to users on the internet, whether it be spam on selling stuff, or scaring you with updates that you need to have performed on your computer.

it is quite annoying indeed. to stop it from happening, load up a firewall program, which will block that part, and you wont receive those messages anymore.

hope this helps........

If you look under "Administrative Tools" in the "Control Panel", you will see an icon named "Services" if you double click on that, and turn off the "Messenger Service" and change it so it doesn't start up, you won't get those messages anymore. I've had problems with that in the past.

Most home users don't need/use it. I do though, net send is a quick way to send messages to others here. Even if you disable it, get a firewall ASAP.

I'll disable the service and try to get a firewall. Wich is the best? I've heard that ZoneAlarm does a pretty good job, but it's kind of annoying, displaying popups every 5 minutes. What about Norton? or Deerfield?
