I cannot find what service is allowing a network message popup on a Windows XP machine.

It is not the IM service. Didn't see it under advanced settings.

Anyone know?

There is always Winpopup. But you'd have to be running that before someone could access it. I'd need more info on what the actual window says...

Here's the sledge hammer approach to fixing it :)

Go to start-->settings-->control panel-->computer management-->services

Find "messenger" in the list. Right click, and stop it. Answer yes to the nag messages. Now, right click again on it, and do properties. In the "startup" drop down, choose disabled. Close hit "ok" at the bottom, and close the services window.

Should be fixed.

It's kind of a brute force way of stopping it, but it works. I've done it on some of my machines, and haven't noticed any negative results because of it.

I think you're referring to popup windows alert messages that can be sent with the "net send" command. The name of the service that controls this functionality is called "Messenger" listed under the services panel.

One more addition to Vi_edit's post:

don't change it to 'disabled', change it to 'manual' instead.

Then you can use 'net start messenger' and 'net stop messenger' any time you want.
