Messenger service not installed in XP

Howdy,

I'm working on an MPC laptop onto which I am installing Windows XP. About halfway through the installation, an error message appeared saying something about the "COM+ subsystem not initializing." I hit ok, and it continued on its merry way, so I figured it wasn't important. Then, once I had XP installed and all the drivers loaded, I had to install some more stuff with the aid of a script that automates most of the steps. The script uses Messenger service to instruct the user what to do, and waits for the pop-up window to be closed before continuing. Well, the alerts are not showing up.

After mucking around a bit, I decided to reinstall the OS. I did so, and the COM+ error appeared again. And once again, the Messenger alerts do not show up. I did some more digging, and the Messenger service is not loaded under services.msc, and neither is one of the COM+ services that is shown on other computers here. I only have "COM+ Event System," and not "COM+ System Application."

I am not entirely familar with XP's deeper inner workings, so i'm out of my element here. I am assuming, based on the circumstancers, that the Messenger Service is dependent upon the COM+ System Application service, which for some reason is not loading due to an error in installation. My question is, does anyone know what would cause this error, and how to fix it, or somehow enable the Messenger service so the script will run correctly? Thanks

oh well, nevermind, we're gonna send it back for repairs. The thing's royally screwed up.

Is that a disc with a slipstreamed SP2? Because I think one of the changes that MS made, was to disable the Messenger Service by default.
I've never heard of the COM+ Event System failing to start though, sounds like you are having hardware issues on that machine, or have a corrupted installation medium.

nope, it was just a regular WinXP CD, not slipstreamed. That's why we sent the machine back; it's gotta have some other hardware issues. Which is funny because we just got the machine back to get the hard driver replaced. Oh well.
