I'm looking for a new messenger bag and wanted ideas on one that will hold a laptop, maybe a thermos of coffee, and will hold up reasonably well. I've been using one I picked up from Gap around 5 years ago and I don't like that it doesn't hold it's shape. I feel like I have all of my stuff in a pillowcase.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe I'm a brand ho but my Tumi luggages and pieces have lasted me long enough and still look brand new...well invested IMO.

But of course get the older "ballistic nylon" T3 stuff. The newer things are a little too flashy and while they've trimmed the prices quite a bit on the low-level stuff if you are going to get quality just spring for the better models.

as opposed to?

normal laptop bags, backpacks etc I am guessing. Messenger bags are the epitome of metrosexual but in all fairness I wear one myself because they are very convenient.

I don't think a messenger bag is very metro... I think your getting confused with a certain Seinfeld episode.Exactly how does a laptop bag and messenger bag really differ? A backpack over a messenger back? I'm not 12.

Normal laptop bags, especially the leather ones, are grotesque. They are usually carried by guys wearing stone washed jeans, those little round glasses, and Casio G-Shock watches.

Well, it differs in the way it is carried, one is on the shoulder and one is strapped across the chest for easier carrying, dont ask me why I am just telling you the way it is and how others perceive it for whatever reason.

Really? I see them all the time and I live downtown metropolitan area. Guys in suits, girls etc all sorts of people still use the standard bag.

Honestly I have never seen or heard of anyone referring to a messenger back as metro at all. If anything I'd say a messenger back is more casual and sloppy therefore less metro than "proper" laptop bag.

To each their own I guess.

They are very trendy, new fashions and trendy things seem to get labeled metro pretty easily for whatever reason.

I've got a couple Timbuk2 bags I like. You can customize your own with the size/features/colors you want.

I don't care if people say they are metrosexual or effeminate, they are undeniably handy and you'll lose an arm trying to take mine away.

I recently got this bag for use at work to lug around my Thinkpad + a TON of notebooks and drawings.

I am very impressed at how much this bag can hold, and it has plenty of extra pockets and all. It also has a convertible strap to make it a backpack which is pretty cool except I keep it in messenger mode 99% of the time and the extra straps, etc get in the way. I recommend it if you need lots of pockets and room for laptop+ books.
