Messed up speakers?

Well I'm asking this for my friend. He has the klipsh promedia 4.1 or whatever they are called, and recently they make a lot of static sound. They make it when then volume is changing, that's all I know, but probably happens a lot more.

Any possible fixs?
 
Might be the sound card ... if it's a hiss (audible even when no music is played), it's the sound card or the promedia amp (I'm not sure what the S/N on it is); if it's a distortion in the sound - especially when sharp frequency transitions are made - then it "might" be that the amp/soundcard is clipping (bad - playing too loud), or that the speakers are blown. In which case I think the best solution would be to buy a new set (getting woofer replacements is tough).

Overall, my best guess is sound card hiss - no cure, except maybe some sort of passive filtering system, or the obvious sound card upgrade.
 
yep its a hiss.. I was thinking the cabling that was hooked up to the sound card.. because only a few of the speakers hiss, i think, or maybe all of them do.

He has the sound blaster live! as well.. so i dont think he can actually upgrade to anything better.
