Messed up Excel Files

getting this error:
This File Is Not in a Recognizable Format

have tried about everything I could find on the internet already including a repair app as well.
Opened with openoffice, excel viewer.
messed with a backup of the same file in word.

I have used this file for a very long time and cannot find my backup.

Have you checked Microsoft Support Web site?

I'm guessing that you probably have, but I don't have a better answer.
