Messages Problem

One of the problems with Apple using common names for programs is that it can be hard to find answers to questions on Google et al.

I have Messages Version 6.1 (11D1069) installed on my 2009 MacBook (OSX Lion). Starting last week, in the dock, the Messages icon always has a red circle with a "1". I cannot get it to go away.

I have cleared all my chats;
I have deactivated/reactivated all accounts;
I have removed the icon from the dock and added it again.

Any thoughts?

Is it possible to uninstall and then reinstall it?

edit: can you stick a piece of tape over the screen at that spot? :p

Did that.

Thought of that.

So, in the meantime, I had a chat and when that ended, the red circle/number went away.

Weird.
