Mesh-style net fabric as a fan guard

So I got a 2005FPW and I need to cool my case as much as possible so that 2.2ghz at the very least is stable so I can pump 1680x1050 in games. So I cut out the metal fan guard in the front of my case so it now intakes air unobstructed. I want to do the same to my rear, crappy 60mm exhaust since it feels like the metal grid obstructs the airflow by like 50%. But I don't want an exposed fan, and there are nice, unobstructing metal grills online by they are $5+. So I bought some netting like fabric for $0.50. Could I just put this over the fan as a guard? I figured if I secured it tightly so it doesn't bulge and get in the fan. Any idea what would be the best way to attach it? It seems like this would not hamper airflow at all. The metal that comes in cases seems very inefficient.

It should work fine, but most sizes of wire fan grills are available for 99 cents and they have always been the least restrictive. SVC.com will ship small items by first class mail w/o insurance (you have to agree to accept shipping risks) to save on shipping so it should total out to under $2. shipped.

I agree with what Zepper said. It should work fine, but I'd definately spend an extra dollar and get a real fan guard. They're very cheap, and you don't have to do any cutting or special screwing to get them on.

While I was at SVC looking for something else, I checked on the 60mm wire grills - they are 99 cents with FREE 1st Class mail shipping! And if you need 5 or more, they are only 50 cents each...
