Merry Xmas from BellSouth: You Are Fired!

Yes, the officiers at BellSouth certainly know how to ring in the holidays by announcing 10-days before Xmas that 338 people will lose their job. While I am sure BellSouth is not alone in this kind of December activity, I really have to wonder some companies think they will ever be portrayed as anything but unfeeling when letting go employees so close to the 'festive time of the year'. Hmm, maybe they are trying to see if they can increase the suicide rate?

Hope no one in BellSouth-land has service affected by this. Adpbe PDF of those terminated jobs and for those specifically in Georgia.

So, has anyone else been given the boot during the month of December, or immediately following Xmas and NOT been part of the retail industry? Of course, I am talking about the loss of permanent full-time positions and not seasonal or PT positions.

It's fairly common. Sucks whatever time of year it happens. Some of those folks might not even celebrate xmas... and it still sucks for them.

I think it was last year... maybe the year before... the company that bought my company laid off like 3000+ people.. about 10 days before xmas.

any company whose fiscal year ends on dec 31 is like this

Losing your job sucks any time of the year... better before Christmas than after, at least they have time to return the presents.

I think it would have been better to have made an announcement before Thanksgiving as holiday shopping is the most busiest in the USA on the Day After Thanksgiving. Instead, not only are those 338 people out of their current jobs, but they have holiday bills generated from their false sense of job security that allowed them to holiday shop. Yeah, employers really know how to make a person feel the spirit of the holidays.

And what is worse is that it was reported last week that BellSouth will spend $2 Billion in 2005 to upgrade their DSL network to ADSL2+. My heart goes out to those people, and I hope I'm not next, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit.

Do you work for BellSouth and are you one of those being laid off?

Yes, I do work for BellSouth. No, I wouldn't be directly effected, but anyone with more seniority than myself could spell sudden consequences for me and some others in my similar position. The word got out yesterday, and the local CWA website had the information for the world wide webbers to see.

This isn't so much about BellSouth, but any large employer throwing employees into the cold this close to Xmas. I would have prefered just before Thanksgiving. Now its a return-those-gifts before they are given.

Companies do this quite often. I never liked the idea as I always thought it best to lay people off after the holidays, but you are correct in saying that holiday expenses may make the situation worse. There really is no good time to lay people off.

I got notice a week ago that my contract will not be renewed (mine and 6 other contractors "budget issues"), and my last day will be December 31st. Merry Christmas and a Happy Fricking New Year!

You should've posted this over in P&N, they would be celebrating the loss of the jobs there.
That's the New American Way.

They get 60 days notice before their jobs are gone, right. Our center outside atlanta was hit really hard on comm techs back in october, off payroll date sometime soon. I think ~225 techs got the notice and there is only going to be a small handfull left, maybe ~10.

Those that have jobs that are being directly surplussed do get 60-days, but if their is bumping rights involved that length of time can be 30-days or less. The current surplus effects 338 people. Three out of four quarters this year Bellsouth announced non-management suplus conditions. I only know of one quarter where management announced their own suplus. Currently, and inspection of the BellSouth job-bank for current employees shows <20 jobs in Georgia (where I am at), and >50 for management. To even be considered (resume-wise) for management, you must depart your non-management position as a current Bellsouth employee.

Or you can go straight into management just like my old college roommate did starting salary 50K..........Daddy hooked him up with the Job.

Actually, there currently hasn't been any allowances of promotion of represented employees into management. They stopped that around the first of the year.

At circuit city we drag any idiot in off the streets who can wear a red shirt and give him money for sitting on his ass in the warehouse. Then the real employees like myself make fun of them and they all get fired on Jan. 1st, anyway. We do our firing on new years.
