I know that pagan type relgions and WICCA types celebrate it and the summer solstice as well.
The only one I want to celebrate is a Pontiac...
I wouldn't call it a celebration, but I always watch the sun set on the Solstice, unless it's overcast or something. No reason, I just do.
My Wiccan friends celebrate Solstice. We celebrate xmas on the 23rd at our house so we don't have to compete with celebrations with the extended family (leave the 24th free for the in-laws and the 25th open for my parents/siblings), and consider Solstice to be more pertinant to us than the Christian holiday.
I'm sick of this politically correct BS :| They can't say Merry Christmas anymore for fear of offending some dolt. Then they no longer allow the salvation army to collect donations at their stores anymore. Sheesh. I'm not shopping at a store where they can't even have a "Merry Chistmas" sign.....
I think that they have a Merry Christmas sign and a Merry Winter Solstice sign too.
Maybe someone that shops at Target can report.

Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on Jan. 6th, although nobody really knows the exact date of the historical Jesus' birth. Dec. 25th is a later, and even more fictious date, chosen specifically to overlay the pre-exisiting (pagan) Winter Solstice celebrations.
I have long celebrated the Solstice and the Equinox with parties replete with drumming circles, good cheer, and food. They are an age old, intergral part of our globe's journey through the cosmos, part of the eternal cycle of life on this planet.
Please don't start shaking in your fearful fundie boots, Rip, we are a diverse culture with no state religion, and the rest of us mean you no harm. Lighten up, mkay?

Actually, December 25th is the birthday of Mithra, the Roman God of Light. It was adopted as the day for Christmas. Of course, Winter Solstice could have been the basis for the birthday of Mithra.

Merry Christmas, Rip!
I personally love the best parts of Christmas, the deeper parts, and my loving and being loved childhood memories of same. Takes me back to a time when I felt all was right in my 6 year old world and my Daddy was the man! Balsam fir incense in the chimney of that log cabin burner, damn . . . the lights, the tree, the snow, the presents, Christmas dinner at my Uncle Tom and Aunt Edie's -- makes me all misty eyed just thinking.
I'm sorry for the all too safe dilution of "Happy Holidays" now offered amongst strangers and love to belt out a cheery Merry Christmas to those I know well enough to be able to do so.
How about you, Rip? Are you open hearted enough to also wish me a Merry Winter Solstice as well?

Well, it will work for them in some ways. I'll be happy to shop at a store that not only doesn't have bothersome bell-ringers outside, but is open enough to have a sign up to celebrate my chosen winter holiday.
And as far as the bell-ringers go, it's not their presence that bothers me, it's that damn bell. The K-mart that used to be right near my work had a cellist outside instead of a bell-ringer a couple years ago. That was awesome. I donated more at that location than any other Salvation Army bell-ringer location.

It has never been a day to "celebrate" in my 21 years... Dont see it starting any time soon either
