Merom Requires BIOS Update

Looks like it. Many notebooks today won't boot if the BIOS doesn't recognize the CPUID; hell a Dell wouldn't let me put a 533MHz FSB Dothan into an 855 chipset (400MHz FSB) even though it would have worked fine otherwise.

Yeah, some companies suck like that.

Out of notebook manufacturers, I'd expect the slower to market brands to release the Merom BIOSes while companies like Dell would just release new models.

Hmm, maybe. All depends how many of their customers want Merom compatibility. The smaller companies may just wait until Santa Rosa and not give Merom+Napa support at all.

Dell won't be releasing newer models, the D620s and D820s support it, D420 is still awaiting validation. Dell has a 12 to 18 month life cycle for notebooks, no way they are going to release a model in the spring and replace it with a different model in the fall.

Someone has already tested Merom in a Dell M1710 and it worked fine without a bios update. Since the M1710 and E1705 share the same mainboard, it will also work in the E1705.

Good info, got a link?

And they don't necessarily share the same BIOS, but they do share the same chipset.

Even if they don't share the exact same BIOS, the community at Notebookforums.com has shown that what you can do with an XPS M1710 can easily be done with an E1705, such as placing 7800GTXs/7900GTXs in the E1705.
