Merge file w/registry on different drive

My friend's Windows XP home keeps getting a BSOD as windows starts to load. I found a MS page that states that my problem is from the new MB having a different ide controller and I am told to merge a .reg file with the registry. I can't do this because windows doesn't load. Is there anyway to throw his drive in my PC and merge a .reg file with his registry and not mine. I think regedit automatically merges with my registry and I did not see an option to set which registry to merge with.

Basically it's saying you need to put the drive into a PC that boots successfully (ie put the old board back in), import that registry setting, and you'll then be fine. Anther way is just to change the IDE HDD controller (while booted with the old MB) to "Standard PCI IDE Controller".
