Mercury / Kobian KVT600X-L mobo can't access lan/usb/snd

i struggled to get a clean install of win xp pro to see the integrated lan/usb/snd card on my Mercury / Kobian KVT600X-L mobo but after flashing the bios (three times!); re-installing win xp pro a number of times and forcing driver updates for each of the problem components a number of times with sp1 and the latest via 4in1 - it worked!
at 1st i'd been ready to give-up and send the mobo back as faulty but when i'd tried a couple of Linux distro "LIVE" cd's (Lindows v4.5.212/Knoppix v3.6/suse 9.2) they had worked fine without any problems and i'd instantly been able to play music located on other machines across my network.
however, when i tried to install Linux i had the same probs i'd had with windows - no lan/usb/snd.
i've now tried mandrake 10.1 and 10 powerpack; suse 9.1; fedora core 3;debian v3.0r3; red hat 9.

i realise if i could just get the lan working i could then access the disto web site and download newer drivers which would clearly solve my problem but i can't get the damn thing to talk. with each distro (and windows did this too) it seems to think i have a rhine ethernet card whereas it should be finding a via card (integrated on the mobo).

and thoughts please?

p.s.
i won't be trying debian again, at least in the short term, as i thought the install process was far too painfull for any mortal to endure.
