Mercedes-Benz is not overly concerned, says spokeswoman Donna Boland. The residual value fluctuations are based on product life cycles, she says. Many Mercedes vehicles are nearing the end of their cycles and will be replaced in 2005 and 2006, she says

makes me glad I own a 10 year old Oldsmobile. It's already fully depreciated!!

Makes me glad that the newest car I drive is a 1995 Buick Century. Most of my fleet has depreciated to the point where the scrap metal is worth more than the car.

Good for Nissan. Their resale has been atrocious and is the reason why a late model maxima is such a freaking sweet buy. Wait a couple years and watch 40% of the value go down the toilet. Then buy it!

This is a reason I wouldn't buy a new Nissan right now too.

My 1998 328i was a demo, got it 11k below sticker with 8k miles on it. I'm thinkin it was a good investment. Nearly free and clear with 117k miles and still runs like a scalded cat.

To some, driving is something we must do, to others, a passion that is to be savored each time the car is started.

Surprised subaru does so bad.
Cadillac's anticipated average three-year residual value is 45.6 percent, up from a projected 40.7 percent for the 2003 model year
<- haha

Given that I've owned a Sentra that gave me 183,000 miles with only minimal maintenance and recently bought a 2000 Frontier Crew Cab I've always thought Nissan has offered the best value on the buyer's end in comparison to Honda and Toyota - which are still good values but sometimes a little overpriced IMO just because of the name.

To speak in sweeping generalizations, if Honda and Toyota are a 10 on the reliability scale, Nissan isn't very far behind - probably a 9 on most models. Yet their base price on most similar model new cars is usually lower and for whatever reason they've always depreciated substantially faster than Hondas or Toyotas even though their reliability is nearly as strong. When I was looking at 2 year old Tacoma Double Cabs many people still wanted ~85-90% of the NEW price. In comparison, a similarly equipped 2 year old Frontier Crew Cab could've been had for ~75% of the new price (which was originally ~$2,000 lower than the Toyota so it was a substantial savings.) While I liked the Tacoma a little better, for me it was a no-brainer to go with the Frontier.

Not being in the market for new cars personally, I would obviously rather have low resale so I can pick up a used Maxima for cheaper.

Now if they would up their interior quality, their resale value would rocket to the top and become the perfect auto make :p
