Mercedes or BMW?

OK, so assuming that both BMW and Mercedes Benz both make a model for the type of car you are shopping for, which would you buy?

Personally I'd go with the BMW. I've always been brought up with the notion that with the Mercedes Benz you're paying for the emblem on the hood. If you want actual performance for the money you're shelling out, go for a BMW.

Either but it has to be a M or a AMG.

I'd say M if I wanted something leaning towards the mean sporty side, and AMG learning more to the luxury side.

It's when you get the lower end budget models that you are just paying for the name and bragging rights. Like the C class and a no frills 3 series with cloth seats just to say you have one, and you want everyone to see the logo and think you have a $80,000 car.

I don't care what kind of logo it has on it or how much you paid for it, if it has the cloth and plastic interior of a $8,000 Kia, it's not a Mercedes or BMW.

Only M or AMG for me as well. I prefer the M.

i just test drove a z4 and a z4 M... i noticed a difference in the engine, but that was about it...

you didn't test drive hard enough and took too few turns

My order of german Lux would be

Audi > BMW > MB

BMW is too snooty, and MB is too old, and I love Audi's 😛

Depends on how much I want to spend. To match the performance of a BMW with a M-B you'll spend more on the M-B. I've enjoyed the 5 Series I've owned but have to admit the CLK55AMG was a ball to drive too. I left BMW because of the Bangle Butt. I still see too much of the Bangle influence on most BMWs so they are not as coveted as the before Bangle era.

I drive a BMW. I do not like Mercedes at all.

UNLESS

it is an AMG. The high end AMG models are faster than M. BMW cannot compete with AMG efficiently.

The MLs are crap...soccer mom SUVs. I used to get them as loaners all the time when I drove a Benz from 02-04. I wouldn't buy another Benz now...I didn't have any major issues but a guy I worked with was burning a quart of oil a week and he had problems out the ass. IMHO Benz quality has fallen significantly over the past several years. Plus you no longer get the warranty you used to get. Back then I could call for any little thing and I would have a guy waiting for me at work in the morning with a loaner. They would take my car, do whatever was necessary while I had a loaner...all for free.

the trend seems to be in this thread: BMW for performance. M-B for looks. I admit that the CLS is sex on wheels as far as looks go, but I just couldn't drive something that's as mechanically inferior when compared to a BMW.

I wouldn't say inferior, i mean MB covers a lot more automotive ground than BMW and I don't think I've ever read a direct comparison of the CLS63AMG and the M6/M5

MBs tend to be faster(0-60, 1/4 mile and top speed since Ms are limited to 155 while most AMGs are limited to 186) and BMWs tend to be more agile, whichever floats your boat i guess.

Looking at BMW 335i coupe right now, just waiting for 08 models...

Benz just don't have anything to compete with 335i in that class.

CLK63 AMG:

Power (SAE net) 500 hp @ 7000 rpm
Torque (SAE net) 478 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm

BMW M5/6:

Power (SAE net) 500 hp @ 7750 rpm
Torque (SAE net) 383 lb-ft @ 6100 rpm

The Benz engine is superior to the BMWs. Inferior how again? Unless you are referring to some other mechanical aspect which is still a moot point. BMW does have more technology packed into their engines, but MB achieves the same, if not better, result with their engines. Generally I tend to go with BMW because their cars are sportier.

It would depend on the individual model for me. There are classes that I'd prefer from Mercedes (ie. S Class over 7 Series), and classes I'd prefer from BMW (M5 vs E63).

I meant quality of engineering, not output.

That Benz engine is clearly superior to the BMW S85, except for the number of things ending in -tronic. BMW has more -tronic technologies.
