Oh that IS cool. Whats with that stubby little gear shift looking thingy on the console? Is it an automatic or something? Is that the shifter?

It's automatic, yes. :frown:

This thing with a 7 or 8 spd would make me ejaculate, no problem.

7 or 8 spd manual I should say. If I ever make millions of dollars, I will make Mercedes develop a 7 or 8 speed manual gearbox.

I've driven the original at sub 30mph speeds on some side roads, very eccentric but inspired car. Felt unreal to be able to do so. Surprisingly tough to drive IMHO, but utterly cool. I guess a most/lot of older cars are like that though.

lol 8 speed! The one I drove was a 4 speed with a bitch of a clutch.

Which car were you in? My mustangs pedals are pretty heavy, so I can see the disdain for such a setup there, but most other cars with manual trans have might lighter clutch pedals so it's a lot easier, imo.

And yes 8 speed would be awesome. It would let you concentrate on the power band of the engine more readily and could lead to some pretty awesome MPG on the freeway while doing 100. 😀

It was a late '50s 300sl, think it was a '58. Beautiful beautiful car. Yeah the clutch was ridiculous. Also remember hearing the guy say he has to change like 8 or 10 quarts of oil really often. Only a 3 liter.

I bet a manual gearbox could most probably be dropped in there for a few $ by any experienced Benz tuner. The problem is, you need to have access to the computer system's software, there lies in the problem, telling the computer that the engine is being shifted manually.

Yea, that is a problem, although I'm sure the software could be hacked--I doubt security is a huge issue for Merc

no, you really don't want that. I've driven pretty much every mercedes built in the last 15-20 years, from shitty a-classes to biturbo v12 s-classes. Merc slushboxes are awesome, but good lord, the manuals are terrible for cars that expensive. to replicate a mercedes manual, buy a bag of marbles and shove a stick in there. presto! mercedes shifting feel!

What year did Mercedes just completely abandon the manual tran option? Plus if they were to develop a 7 or 8 spd manual, I think it'd be improved--or they could outsource one from say, Aston Martin or VW.

Plus, that shift feel sounds quite satisfying anyway. 😛
