So is this a ding against Sophos?

More of a PR issue. Stupid people that opened SMB 1.0 to the internet and admins that didn't disable SMB 1.0 are to blame for the rapid spread of wannacry. But Sophos was bragging about several hospital in NHS are under Sophos protection and the hospitals got hit by wannacry.

I stand corrected. 😉

The hardware I can use for pfsense or Sophos (seriously overkill):

I7-6700K
Gigabyte GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 mobo
16GB DDR4-2400
256GB Intel 600 m.2 SSD
Intel dual port 1000PT NIC

That is why you virtualize and use it for other things as well. Like Plex server.

I have like ten VMs on my hyper-v.

I have another machine handling those duties. That machine was destined to be an HTPC but i never got around to making it. Like i said, i know it's a colossal waste of resources to use it as a router, but i am not sure if the Meraki is sufficient or if using Sophos would better suit me.
