Mental Health Care is the real solution. Also, Biden signs new gun bill.

I don't know if this does enough as far as curing the root problem is concerned. Like most gun bills, it seems desperate to control inanimate objects which historically hasn't had much effect. But any time someone suggests seriously expanding mental health care the republicans get hostile and whine about socialism.

We should be clear that the guns are the problem, not mental health. I’m sure mental health contributes to some extent but we should never lose sight of the fact that the #1 problem by FAR is the guns.

Exactly. Are Canada and all of Europe, are there populations so well adjusted they have little mental health issues?

I'm sure in some of those countries where the quality of life is much better than America, where you don't have to worry yourself to death about health care, better wages, more time off, better working conditions etc all these things contribute to a better mental health.

But it's not enough to make up for the fact that we want to sell guns like candy here and they don't.

Guns are definitely the main reason we have gun violence like we do here. End stop.

Guns are the fucking problem. Once you control for all the different variables the only one the US is exceptional in is the number of guns per person. It’s a fucking gun problem and you need to accept that.

One thing is the mass shootings, but overall compare deaths by guns, US is the highest ranking by far of the Western Countries. South America is blowing the chart.

Expanding mental healthcare is great. Not for doing anything about mass shootings, though.

Parts of the legislation are likely to be generally helpful, like the focus on straw buyers and traffickers. As a whole until guns are made even somewhat more difficult to obtain I don't expect any major improvement in our level of gun violence.

I mean other countries have crazies too. You think America is the only country with disaffected depressed young males?

Substantive gun control requires 2/3rd of the senate agreeing to it. Substantive mental health care doesn't. I'm still banking on the proverbial pissing in one hand vs wishing in the other.

Substantive mental health care would require what half of this country considers SOCIALISM so nothing is going to happen on that front either.

While it's a positive step, my issue with this is that it will have minimal impact overall. So little that the gun nutters will, after some period of time, point to the statistics (that we're not allowed to study) and say "SEE! Gun control stuff doesn't do anything!!!!!!!"

It's a good step.

I sorta doubt the red flag laws will do much because LEOs don't act quickly enough or figure it out soon enough.

The proposal to raise the age for semi auto long guns would have been more useful than the red flags, given the prominence of teenage males in mass shootings. Gives some breathing room for them to get out of the high school drama revenge suicide bullshit.

Hopefully actually effective and resourced mental health identification and diversion can prevent tragic paths from developing before we're left with just roadblocking a determined and suicidal shooter, which is pretty weak control.

Regardless, much of the gun crime is committed with illegally obtained weapons, so cracking down on trafficking and straw purchases is desperately needed.

Mental health services are in serious crisis here. They have all but collapsed, thanks to COVID plus the Tories (longest waiting lists in NHS history). But people aren't shooting each other in significant numbers.

Why it COULDN'T POSSIBLY be because they have exponentially fewer guns available to shoot each other with could it?!? (LOL)

And because this IS P&N: /S
