memtest86...do you use default or all tests?

Personally, I loop the standard test 20 times. I think anything else is a waste of time, especially if the system will take Prime95 and all other benchmarks after 20 loops of MemTest86 standard...

wow... 20 loops... that's a long time especially if you have a big stick (I know there's a joke in there somewhere.. :p)..

Personally, I run all test for 10 loops.. May be 7 or 8 loops when I'm impatient... :)

I "test" my settings by running multiple passes of test #5...when I find the settings that pass 50 passes or so, then I'll run all tests, 10 passes...works everytime. This may differ on systems, but with the testing I've done, test #5 is the kicker (and it doesn't take long at all to run)...;):)

Mikki ~ youre selling yourself short by running that way :|
bite the bullet in run all 11 tests, cache ON.

the "nintendo cheat code" is C-2-3-1-2-0-space bar

;)

i never crash test #5 ~ for me its usually test #4 or #10.
...but that doesnt mean i should only run test #4 & #10 :p ;)

Ok I ran P95 with my Corsair PC3200 @ 440 DDR for 7 hours at 2-3-2-5. No errors. Then today I set Memtest to run all day while I was at work. All 11 test for 9 hours 20 minutes, 86 passes. I got 3 errors.

Test Pass
_3___45
_3___50
_6___62

Is my memory stable?

I'm not saying I just run test 5 and that's it...all the testing I've done lately it's always test 5 that craps out (test 4 also, but it takes longer)...so I start high and lower until I can pass test 5 multiple passes, at that point I run all 11, 10 passes...works everytime. Like I said before, it could be that is what my particular memory/system works out as, but it works everytime, and it's a heck of a lot faster than running all the tests...;):)

shortcuts will eventually come back to bite you in the arse :p

the only true shortcut is 1 hour preliminary testing, to get familiar with whats going on.
then you can go for the long haul w/o too many surprises.

its always a good idea to make a complete "map" of exactly whats going where, cause you wont remember later ;)

How many days for 100 Passes? It's taken about an hour (not exact, just a guess) to do a pass on my XP 2100 w/ 512MB DDR. I know the time varies by CPU, Memspeed, amount of mem, but, that's gotta be a few days. I'm guessing beyond 48hr+.

I run all eleven tests for at least 10 loops, more if I can afford to let it run. 10 loops with my 1GB of RAM takes about 13-14 hrs.

hey guys, i was wondering if anyone could help me out w/ memtest.. i dled the new latest version and installed it on a bootable floppy.. i have two sticks of pc2100 256mb ddr ram in my computer, i ran memtest once at night about 7 hours with both sticks in and it got these results: screenshot1 and screenshot2.. can someone explain to me what this means? but then earlier today, i was tyring to find out which stick of ram is bad, so i took one stick out and left the other in and ran the test for about 40 min, and it found no errors, i did the same with the other stick and it also found no errors... do i have to run memtest longer than 40 min for each stick?

(the reason i think one of the sticks of ram is bad is because windows explorer keeps crashing whenever i click on large video files, ive checked hard drives and OS's and those didnt seem to be the problem)

thanks

holy cow!

hmmm,
it takes mine 17mins to run all 11 tests 1-loop. (on 512mb @ 354dcddr cas2226 1T)
..... x 10 loops ..... is 2hr 52mins roughly.

what speed you running memory @ Ralf? (300 or 400ddr?)

It takes about 1:15 to run one loop of all eleven tests with 1GB (2 x 512MB) @ DDR400. My RAM is running at DDR400 for sure because my Sandra memory score is about ±3040 for the two sticks (at CL 2.5-3-3-3-7).

I just ran Memtest86 on a customers box the other day. It had 512MB (2 x 256) of Crucial DDR2100 RAM. One loop took around 50-55 minutes as close as I can remember.

Hey guys, I just got a new stick of 512mb 333mhz cl 2.5 pc2700 from crucial, it appears to be Samsung though. I have a new dimension 4550 2.66mhz and was wondering if I should run memtest or prime95 on it? Are these programs only to be used by overclockers? What exactly is memtest and prime95? Thank you.

Unless you suspect your memory is bad, there should be no need too. People here mainly use those programs to test overclocked stability.

I run all tests for 12 hours with the cache on.

It might be overkill, but I once had Prime95 fail after 11 hours and 34 minutes! I wasn't a happy camper! I have 2 systems, so it's not a big deal to leave such a program run for a long duration. As an ex-QA manager, I believe in extensive tests!
