Memtest error

I have an "error" according to Memtest. Does that automatically mean that one or more of my memory sticks are bad?
Or could it be the motherboard?

Thanks

You can do that or just take one stick out at a time, and see if it's just a single ram stick. If all the sticks are reporting errors it could be that your mobo/cpu caches are at fault. You can read all about that at the site vietofmars provided above.

"Please be aware that not all errors reported by Memtest86 are due to bad memory. The test implicitly tests the CPU, L1 and L2 caches as well as the motherboard."

I get errors sometimes if I have the ram overclocked higher than it will go. If you are running it stock speeds, or at underclocked speeds, then errors are bad.

Test in another mobo to be sure. Otherwise ram may be bad.

Surr3al has a good suggestion. If you have 2 sticks, pull one out and test one at a time to determine if one stick is bad while the other is good.

Ok..I ran it again switching sticks and one stick appears to be bad.
I suppose I will be sending them back to Newegg.

Thanks for the help🙂

You don't have to send both sticks back unless it was a Dual-Channel kit.

It was a dual kit

It's possible that you can just reseat the RAM. I once had errors with Memtest and tried each of my two sticks alone on the mobo, found no errors. When I plugged them both back in together and ran Memtest, there were no errors. Odd.
