would i need 1 or 2 sticks of memory? i would like 512 to start maybe more later

Does your motherboard support dual-channel?

If it does and if you want to take advantage of the dual-channel performance, you need two preferably identical sticks.
If you want 1GB of RAM, you will need two sticks of 512MB.
