Memory Wrong Choice

My ASUS P5GC-MX Main Board supports 2 sticks of DIMMs for up to 2GB un-buffered non-ECC 533/400 MHz DDR2. I wanted to bump my memory up to 2GB. I lurked the forums and thought that I knew what I was doing which turned out not to be the case. Like the Nubey that I am I got what I thought was a good deal on two sticks of Crucial Ballistix (2) 1GB PC2-6400 800MHz 2.2v. System won't boot on that. I even had one guy that said that he did just exactly what I thought that I could do. Can someone tell me the correct memory I should get that works with my board in a quality similar to what I have now? Can someone give me a good suggestion as to what I can do to perhaps exchange with the Ballistixs. I don't think that Buy.com will be interested in an opened package.

Intel e6600 Core 2 Duo @2.40GHz

Kingston 512MB PC2-4200 CL4 240-pin DIMM
GeForce 7100 GS 256 MB
WD 250GB GB SATA II
Corsair CMPSU 550W

Hi--

hmm, to use an automobile analogy, someone recommended Pirelli ultra low profile racing slick run flat tires for your Toyota Tercel....not a good combo.

There are many memory configurator sites, the best, IMO, from Kingston and Crucial:

http://www.kingston.com/

http://www.crucial.com/index.a...4_kvnpecfrscawodbmihog

Crucial's will even scan your system for you.

Your system's memory bus maxes out at 667.....

And, I looked through your motherboard's manual, doesn't look like you can adjust the memory voltage, so, no way you can run those 2.2v modules.

Recommend: return said memory to Buy.com...see if you can avoid the restocking fee....or, sell it.

Or, going forward (man that is an annoying buzz phrase), think outside the box: new motherboard. You have a fine CPU there....consider a P35 chipset mobo, about $100 for a very good one.

If you decide to replace the RAM, get RAM that runs standard DDR2 800 at 1.8V.

Thanks NXIL, your answer will be printed and put on the refrigerator door. I came by that motherboard through a Techno-friend and it was only meant for a stop-gap replacement of a burned-out board. I am edging back towards an upgrade, and was only going to use the 2GB memory to try to fix some pin-points of green light in my flight sim. I can't do much until after tax time. I appreciate your help and your concise answer. I just know enough to get in trouble. I am 77 years old and I was working and traveling the world while computers were coming about so I didn't have much of an opportunity to learn until now. Thanks again.
