i have a pair of 512 mb pc 3200 OCZ el platinum rev 2 sticks with the silver heatspreaders. I am having some issues with one stick over heating constantly and causing my os to bsod. does anyone have a tip on how to safely remove these heat spreaders so i can reapply some AS5?

How do you know the DIMM is overheating?

One DIMM will generally get hotter then the other since its the one used most often. It will also be the first one to wear out and need replacing.

I touched it and it nearly seared my skin. I will probably end up purchasing a new set. saw a great deal in another thread for 2gb of corsair ram.

The simple fact that the spreader is getting hot means it's working. Changing the TIM is not going to change that and may impede it. Can you give your system specifications and tell us what voltage you are running on the memory, etc. Also, have you tried just putting a fan over the memory? We make a nice inexpensive cooler but an 80mm fan and a genuine McGyver certified rubber band works good too.
