Memory usage of Intel HD Graphics in 2D

Hi, I'm going to be getting an i3-530 and an H55 board so I can use the integrated graphics. (I don't play games) This means some of my system RAM will be used by the integrated graphics (IG), which I don't mind.

Intel says that a max of 1.7GB of system RAM will be used by the IG. My question is, does anyone have figures as to how much system RAM the IG uses while in "2D mode", for example while in Windows 7 doing regular stuff like web browsing, text editing, etc? I would assume it doesn't need more than 64MB or so but I'm still curious. :)

Thanks!

I bet it's gonna use more than 64megs, the Windows 7 Aero UI is pretty bloated.

Well, M$ recommends 256MB, so I think that it would be pretty close to that.

I was using the HD3300 on my system for awhile after my 4770 started giving me booting problems. The mobo came with 128MB sideport and I allocated another 128 from system memory, worked great for Win7.

I would suggest 256mb at least while 512mb will give plenty of comfort. Remember the Intel HD Graphics hardware accelerate video. Just to name a few things in the list: Flash in general, youtube, Hulu, & desktop video playback. All of that will try to use the hardware acceleration.

With 3 tabs open in IE8, using 1 for streaming music and on Windows 7 64-bit, its using 57MB. It would be quite hard to get even at 100MB.

You also need 4GB of memory to get 1.7GB allocated. 2GB gives less than half that, 792MB or so. Just for fun, opening 6-7 extra IE windows resulted in ~6MB or so more usage. Care to open 1600 windows? ;)

Great, that's what I was looking for, thanks!

By the way, how are you able to monitor how much RAM the HD graphics are using? A special app, etc? :)

On Windows 7...

-Right click on desktop, click on "Graphics Properties"
-Click on "Options and Support" tab
-Click on "Information Center"

That'll show your max memory, current allocated one, and the fixed amount. Though it won't update the info until you switch to other tabs and switch back.
