Memory Upgrade Trouble

I'm trying to upgrade my memory, so I just got a second 512MB stick.

Now the computer will only boot into safe mode, but not into normal windows mode (I'm using Win98SE).
Strangely, both 512MB sticks work perfectly alone, in either of my 2 memory slots.

My motherboard is K7S5A, with an Athlon 2400+ XP

Both memory sticks are Kingston KVR266X64C25/512. However, one is Made in China, the other is Made in USA. You think that causes the trouble? Or anything else I can try?

you've hit a limit on the amount of ram 98se can handle - I can't remember if there's an update or not, but first try getting all the updates (except .Net framework and the language updates) from windows update, and see if it will then boot with the extra ram.

WHy do you want a gig of ram for 98se?

the problem is as stated, win98se will not work properly with more than 512mb there is a workaround posted on microsofts website...but it dont always work, i have had it work 1 time out of 3 tries....

its not plain sdram right? k7s5a doesn't like 2 non ddr most of the time. its a known bug
Maybe, but KVR266X64C25/512 should be a 512MB PC2100 stick with a CAS latency of 2.5.

I never had trouble with k7s5a and 2 sticks of sdram... I did have trouble when I put my screwdriver through the motherboard while taking off the HSF though. I still wish I'd just bought another one instead of 'upgrading' to a kt333 board.

2 sticks will work just fine as long as they dont total over 512mb on win98se, xp can go way over that amount....check microsofts website under known issues!

Thank you all for your comments.

I tried the various tricks mentioned on other websites (vcache etc.), but nothing worked out.
Good to know the reason though 😉

its the luck of the draw, look at some k7s5a forums. out of all 5 boards i've delt with, none took to dual sdram though.

Try editing your SYSTEM.INI file, and adding these entries under the appropriate sections:

MaxPhysPage=1FFFF

(vcache)
