Memory upgrade problems?

A friend of mine added two additional 128 MB DIMMs to her dell desktop which originally had one 128 MB DIMM for a total of 384 MB. She says that since the upgrage, her computer has been crashing and acting up. It frequently gives errors saying that the memory at XXXX could not be read.

Is the DIMM bad? I thought it might be at first, but I seem to remember hearing about people having problems with odd numbers of DIMMs and/or memory amounts that aren't multiples of 128. Is this true? If so, can someone explain it?

3 128MB DIMMS is fine. It could be a bad chip. Try running the machine with each 128MB stick and run some memory tests. It could be that the motherboard is having issues due to the layout of one or more of the DIMMS. Some motherboards prefer single sided vs. double sided. Also, make sure the RAM is seated properly.
