Memory upgrade... How much?

I have an Emachines with 2 DIMM slots. One of them already has a 512 MB stick in it, and I'm going to put mor in, but should I go with a 1GB stick or another 512 MB stick? This is a budget PC, so if the performance difference isn't all that great, I would like to save the money, but I also want to be somewhat future-proof.
 
If it supports dual channel one more stick of 512 would give you a good performance boost over one 1gb stick.
