Memory Upgrade Help

I am trying to put together a system to build for myself in the next two weeks. I keep seeing that quality DDR3 6GB kits are very expensive (above $160), so I was thinking of getting a 3 gig kit for now until prices came down.

My question is that if I get a 3 gig kit now on a x58 chipset mobo (x58a-ud3) then can I get a 6GB kit an drop it in there to have a total of 9gigs?

The reason for asking is that I would not want the 3gig now if it has to be tossed out when I want to upgrade the ram.

Another question, does the ram I buy in the future have to be same speed/brand of the ram I purchase now?

I basically want to know if buying a 3 gig ram kit is better right now if I'm tight on budget and then drop a 6 gig kit in there after to get 9gigs?

Thanks in advance

Does the MB have 6 DIMM slots?
At any rate, a 6GB kit now would be your best option. It's only a couple of bucks. You're more likely to run into compatibility issues later if you go populating all your DIMM slots.

Yea, the mobo has 6 dimm slots.

I beleive you but the ram prices are the only turn-off at the moment when it comes to building a pc for me. I can get a 3 gig kit for about $100 but a 6gig is pretty much double that or in the $180 range. I will probably spend the money and get 6 gig for the reasons you said. It would've been nice to go the 9 gig route though since RAM prices are a killer.

I'm in no rush to build other than that 2 of my friends are visiting U.S for reading week and both are going near frys and microcenter so I coulda had the i7-920 for $229 as opposed to $300.

Maybe I'll just wait and grab something in the summer when the hexacores release and push the prices of quads down and hopefully mem prices come down too.
