Hey all,
I am the owner of a new (refurbished) black Macbook. With memory so cheap, I decided to pick up a four gig kit and max out the memory. I looked up the guide on upgrading the memory from Apple's site. Everything was going great until it came to putting my new RAM in one of the slots (the one closest to the center of the machine). The stick will go into the slot, but actually pushing it in is extremely difficult. I know you have to use significant force to get it to pop into place, but this particular slot is different than the other one, which I had no trouble with. I'm able to get the stick in almost the entire way. If you don't look at it closely, it looks like it's in all the way, but of course when you go to boot the machine it gives you the memory error beeps.
Wondering what the heck was up, I got out a flashlight and looked at the inside of the two slots. The one I'm having difficulty with has a piece of clear tape holding some sort of ribbon or plastic circuit thing to the bottom of the slot. I don't think this is the problem... the memory itself sits in place pretty high in the slot. But towards the black of the slot, there appears to be a slim grey ribbon cable... sort of like a miniature IDE cable... that goes towards the back of the slot and is slightly higher than the clear tape that's holding down. I can't see all the way to the back of the slot, but it seems to me that this ribbon cable might be impeding the memory, causing it to be next to impossible to get it seated all the way... I think the actual chips on the memory might be what's getting in the way, because they are slightly larger and more numerous than the ones on the sticks I replaced. But the memory kit I bought (GSkill brand) is made specifically for the Mac.
I will probably end up having to either send it in or take it to a Genius bar (a PITA because the closest one is almost 2 hrs away). But I thought I'd see if anyone else had run into a problem like this with their Macbook.
