Memory to pair with Opteron 170 & A8N32-SLI?

I have the exact setup you do, and I went with the g.skill extreme series memory and am very happy with it. It OCs to 267 with 3-4-4-8 1T timings, and has no problems.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231021

One warning, the A8N-32 will detect the timings way off on this (4-5-5-10) and the memory will crash frequently at these settings. All I did was goto gskills website, plug in all the specs exactly as shown in their config pictures into my bios, and it runs memtest86 to 2000+% in two instances. This is at 267 clock speed.

YMMV, but you should be able to easily hit 2.5. If your lucky, maybe even with stock voltages. These 2 rams kits are both Samsung UCCC. The Gskill is cheaper and no MIR. They should both do 2.6. Check my sig.

No love for the G.Skill GBZX's ???? Currently a $50 MIR on this until 4/16 ($182-50=132 after rebate) so you have a few days to check on it. I really would like to get these for my ultra picky EVGA NF41 SLI board, as they work equally well with my Asrock board based on forum posters who have them.

I'll second that.

Unless you want to go all out and money is no issue get the OCZ PC4000EB Plat's. which are kinda cost a LOT more.

Otherwise, go for the gskill's

so even though the ASUS A8n32-SLI specs say that it supports DDR400, the G.Skill DDR 500 will work?

You'd have to modify either the bus speed or the divider to make it run DDR500 ram, but I'll work.

I'd go with sticks based on Infineon ICs. This board absolutely loves Infineon sticks. I believe the Cosair 3500LL or whatever they market with it also utilizes Infineon chips.

work better and more efficiently then just getting the DDR400 ram the board is spec'd for? I'm apparently not hardcore enough to know the process for doing what you just said, but I do want to get the most out of this machine so any help would be appreciated. I assume it is just changing some settings in the motherboard bios?

Arn't the Infineon IC's impossible to find, and are really expensive? I got mine (luckly) when they just came out, and were cheaper and easier to find.

I'm not sure. Post a link to were you can find some, cause I might be wrong.

To clarify, any OCing I do will be extremely conservative. Should I opt for the higher grade RAM reccomended in this thread if that is the case, or just go with the plain old DDR 400?

I just bought the G.Skill kit that I linked above, finding that it worked perfectly at AUTO 1T command rate on my ultra picky EVGA board, and it works well on my Asrock board so that I can use the sticks in there as well. Your best bet is to check the motherboard forums for your particular board and see if there are any known issues with the sticks being recommended. Some boards are just flat out not able to run RAM as advertised, with DFI being a very respected brand but also having issues with certain sticks. OCZ sticks can be problematic, depending on the hardware combination.

But in my case, 2GB of quality CAS2 RAM for $132 after rebate is just too good to pass up. The super cheap G.Skill (with the red heatspreaders) is priced at $132 but nowhere near the performance of these GBZX model sticks, and requires a 2T command rate to run properly in certain boards, somewhat hindering its performance even more.

Then just get the G.SKill.

I've read some threads on the asus forums, and someone posted that running the memory at too high voltage will shorten the life span of the board and memory. If I were to go with the A8N32-SLI , opteron 170, and the G skill DDR 500 memory referenced in this thread, what voltage would it need to run at? Do I need to worry about frying something? I'm overly paranoid about this, but am hoping since I am only looking to get a moderate OC out of this combination, I should be fine. Any other tips, words of advice, or words to console and assure me would be helpful.

Thanks again. :)

G.Skill rates the 2GBHZ for 2.6v to 2.8v. These voltages are very safe. The ram you are refering to uses Samsung UCCC chips which runs best at 2.6 volts. No worries at all there...

If you keep your cpu less than 1.5volts and memory less than 2.8volts, the system should perform well for years....

this is what I was referring to, from the poster that said they use samsung UCCC chips..

Which are you referring to?

ram on my board sits a little to high for my heatsink - otherwise runs flawlessly.

I am on the doorstep of ordering this, but some of the reviews list problems with A8N series boards, and G skill's website does not list ASUS boards as compatible. DO you have the link on their site to the config for the ram that will work with the A8N32? I'm going to hold of on ordering memory until tomorrow, so I can get more input on this.

Thanks in advance everyone, and thanks for your patience with me during this stressful time of ordering.
