memory timings

I'm not an overlocker, maybe I'm becoming one, but I'm a beginner, so guys don't laugh at this question...

I don't know much about the timing of the memory. ALL i Know is that you increase the timing or the speed of memory when you overlock the memory. Can anyone please explain what is this timing, how it is workin'..etc in a simple words?

BTW:
Is there any other difference between XMS3200LL and XMS3200C2, except for timing?


 
I can't really explain the difference of what the settings do, but it has to deal with how often the memory has to be refreshed and how long it takes to do it. The lower the numbers the quicker the memory is to be refreshed. So when you are overclocking, one way to do that is to set the numbers lower so that the cpu spends less time waiting for the memory to be ready. But, if you set the timings too low, either the memory fails or the motherboard fails as it can't handle those speeds either.

The intel 865/875p motherboards can not handle low latency timings so even if your memory is fast, they can't keep up.

THe difference between the two memorys you asked about are timings. If you have an intel mobo, you probably will not see much difference between the two as the mobo doesn't like low latency. If you are running amd, the differences may be greater.
