Memory timing issues

Overclocking is mostly trial and error.

That's why so few people actually take the time to do it, and even fewer take the time to do it right.

Frankly, I wouldn't touch my RAM speeds until I had dialed in the fastest CPU speed I could possibly achieve, but that's just me. In fact, I used dividers to UNDERCLOCK my RAM while I was testing my CPU, and only dialed it back up to top speed after my CPU was pushed to the limit.

Overclocking the CPU is WAY more beneficial than the RAM.

Of course, depending on your WoW resolution and settings, neither may be causing the lag you see. If you're going to continue to ask for advice, you might consider putting your system specs in your sig so we know what we're dealing with.

Thank you for the insight, Noubourne. I had guessed that overclocking was more guess and check and less science, but was not sure. I have since overclocked my CPU, as I mentioned above, to 2.4GHz (up from 2.0GHz). Given that the processor I was upgrading from, the 3500+ single-core, ran at 2.2GHz, I at least wanted to match my performance through overclock. Beating it was a perk, of course.

I don't frankly understand the nuances of overclocking my RAM, so I'm staying away from it for the most part for now. It seems that every time I play with the clock rate of my memory, my system locks up on me pre-POST. I suspect this is more a function of my motherboard (perhaps power supply?) than it is the memory.

I think I updated my signature. Does the forum system tack that on to "Quick Replies"?

EDIT: Question answered - yes, it does. 🙂
