I'm planning on building a computer soon out of these parts

Core 2 Duo E6750
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
EVGA Nvidia 8800GTS 640mb
Tuniq Tower
Seasonic S12 550W PSU

This will be my first time overclocking and I want to try to get the E6750 to about 3.4-3.6ghz. It seems very possible from what I have read on the forums.

I want 4gb of RAM since I will be using Vista 64-bit Ultimate and playing some of the new games (Crysis, UT3, most new shooters etc.) and since RAM is so cheap, why not go 4gb?

Here's my question, would 2x2gb or 4x1gb overclock better? Here are some of my RAM choices:

2x2gb

GeIL Value Series 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820144064

G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...0231122&Tpk=20-231-122

Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820220227

2x1gb (would buy 2 sets)
Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820220144

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146565

Do you have any other recommendations in those price ranges for either 2x2gb or 4x1gb?

I have no problem filling up all 4 slots on the motherboard (though the extra heat generated could decrease performance??) since by the time I decide to upgrade to 8gb (which won't be for a very long time), DDR3 will probably be very popular and I will just go with that or build a new computer altogether.

id go with the 4x1gb sticks, since it would be cheaper.

generally my pc's dont last long enough for a memory upgrade, i would have either migrated to another platform or motherboard or even faster ram. you cant go wrong with the ballistix at all

alright thanks. if i got 4x1gb of the ballistix could i still overclock it as if i were running just two sticks? but use 2T instead of 1T?

hey i was wondering. doesn't the e6750 have a multiplier of 9? if so, couldn't i just get like 2x2gb of ddr2-800mhz ram and run it at default, at 400mhz? would that equal an overclock of 3.6ghz for the e6750? sorry but i am new to overclocking so i need to read up on it a bit.

Yes.

One thing to keep in mind is that aside from Mushkin's 2 GB dimms, 1 GB dimms tend to clock a lot higher than 2 GB dimms.

Now the downside is that 4 dimms also tend to be alot harder on a motherboard, meaning more northbridge voltage may be needed, & obviously, with 4 dimms, there's a higher chance one may not OC well...

If money's not really tight, i'd highly recommend Mushkin's 2x2 GB kits.

They're by far the best option out there for 2x2 GB kits right now, as no other companies have yet to push anything out that can get past DDR2-800 speeds, whereas Mushkin kits tend to hit that easily & even has a 2x2 GB DDR2-1066 kit available :Q

(Pardon me for sounding like a rep, but they really are dominating the 2x2 scene right now.)

Obviously, if you're only planning to run 1:1, then DDR2-800 gets you at least 3.6 GHz (if you can even reach that with the CPU).
Obviously, there are higher RAM ratios like 5:6, 2:3, etc. if so desired...

do i even need to oc my ram if i want to oc my cpu.... if i get like ddr2-1000 ram? how would this be?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231145

aren't those already fast enough so that i could oc my cpu to ~3.6ghz maximum and run 1:1, perhaps even underclocking the ram a bit?? wouldn't that be a wiser decision? for $189 it seems like an amazing deal.

No, the E6750 has an 8x multiplier: 8 x 333 = 2,666 Mhz. So, 8 x 400 Mhz = 3.2 Ghz. And yeah, I'd definitely buy that G.Skill PC8000, if I were you.

will my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R) boot the g.skill pc8000 ram at ddr2-1000? i have been reading reviews of other ram on newegg and a lot say that most boards won't boot the ram at ddr2-1000, it will boot at ddr2-800.

Yes it should work fine given the correct voltage (vDIMM) as that is what is required for the most part for the SPD of the sticks to determine what is the best frequency/timings with the given memory divider and voltage. The reviews at Newegg aren't really the best source of knowledgeable information FYI. Should the modules for some reason not boot first time at 1000mhz then its easy enough to set it manually.
