Hello. I'm considering a Dell 6000D Notebook w/ 512MB and would like to find another stick cheaper than what Dell offers yet reliable as Dells. Do I have to go through Dell or are there other sites with compatible memory for my make and model book? If so, maybe I should just go w/ 256MB and get cheaper elsewhere, huh? Thanks in advance for those that reply.

Looking at what Dell charges, I would upgrade to 1x512MB for $70 and buy a 512MB stick from NewEgg. I think that one should be compatible, Dell says that you can use both 400MHz & 533MHz DDR2. I hope that they use 533MHz, but I wouldn't be surprised if they use 400MHz. Call them to find out first. Using RAM that can operate 1:1 with the system bus is ideal.
Hope this helps

According to Dell's web site for memory selector for the 6000, its 400mhz.

That is quite misforunate. I looked on Dell's specs and they say it does support 533MHz DDR2. I would imagine that the speed difference is neglibible on a laptop between 400MHz & 533MHz DDR2. Given my perfectionist nature though, I would get the regular 256MB they include, sell it, and buy 2x512MB 533MHz DDR2.
It really annoys me that a lot of manufacturer's are short-changing the Sonoma platform. The latest Sony models don't use PCI-E, hell they don't even use DDR2. Now Dell is including RAM that doesn't match the bus speed. Not surprising in the least, just disappointing

I wonder if they tested it themselves and found to be issues with voltage then hampering battery life. It seems odd they would use 400mhz ram vs 533. I'm looking at the 6000 series with PCI-E etc vs 600m for school.

Does anybody know the size/weight difference btw the two?

According to Crucial's website, both their 400MHz and 533MHz DDR2 SODIMM's use 1.8V. However, running at a higher frequency the 533MHz will draw SLIGHTLY more current. Honestly, I doubt it is enough of a difference that they would choose the cheaper & lower performance module. Knowing Dell, they chose that module for cost alone.
From Dell's website, the 600M with 14.1" screen starts at 4.9lbs (Assuming smaller capacity battery) and the 6000D with 15.4" screen starts at 6.65lbs (Assuming smaller capacity battery). The 6000D is a bit hefty to take everywhere in my opinion, but its not out of the realm of possibiliy.

I just look around work, I saw the Latitude's equivelent of size wise btw 14.1 vs 15.4 laptops. The weight difference is noticable but so it so is the display. This is tough decision. Thanks for you reply.
