Hi there..

I´m discussing the above subject in another forum and I know people here have a little more knowledge about this than I.

What I´d like to know is the starting speed of DDRII RAM, when it´s released.

The guy I´m having this discussion with says that there´s no DDR400 standard which I disagree with. Eventhough JEDEC hasn´t approved it, it is used by many manufatures.

He also claims that DDR433 doesn´t exist but I´ve proven him wrong on that account.

He also claims that when DDRII RAM is released it will be released with the current speed of DDR. That is DDRII-400 (200 Mhz).

I´ve read somewhere that DDRII will start at speed of 533Mhz (maybe 500 or even 466Mhz) and will scale up to 733Mhz+

For DDRIII the speed would be aroung 1Ghz.

However I know that GDDRIII is a special Graphics memory, but I don´t know the speed that it´ll arrive at.

If anybody have some facts about this. Links to pages on Anandtech or another hardware page is greatly appreciated.

Well DDRII plans to scale to 800MHz according to here but I bet it will go even higher eventually. I read that the original plans were for DDRII to debut at 400 so your friend was right on that count. But now that DDRI-400 is sorta standard, I bet those plans will change. It really doesn't make a lot of sense to release at less than 533 if you ask me.

Originally, when the DDR roadmap was planned, DDR was meant to reach 166 MHz (PC2700) at which point the technology would be maxed out, and it would be time to move to DDR2 which could ramp much higher.

As it turned out the demand for acceleration of memory speeds far exceeded expectations and PC2700 had been reached far before it was planned. Improvements in manufacturing techniques and advanced processes helped push DDR beyond its original design limits to reach 200 MHz (PC3200) and some manufacturers offer even faster modules or chips (but note that there is no officially recognised standard faster than PC3200).

DDR2 was initially supposed to be the next step up from PC2700 i.e. PC3200 was supposed to be DDR2 at 200 MHz. The next major speed grade after this is 266 MHz (PC4300), and this is the most likely speed at which DDR2 will be introduced. The maximum speed of DDR2 was planned on as 333 MHz (PC5400), though it seems likely that this will be extended.

DDR3 is currently planned to start at 400 MHz, but it's introduction is likely to be a good 4 years off - so all bets as to what actually happens are off.
